tiger's penance-- (new nike ad)

Just in case you're wondering.......

Tiger wood's first deal with Nike in 1996 was for around $40 million. His second deal with Nike was for between $90 million and $100 million. His current deal is for about $40 million. I don't know if his current deal allows Nike to back out due to Tiger's infidelities.

So Nike is into Tiger for about $180 million. My guess is that if his endorsement, up to now, wasn't worth the coin to Nike, they wouldn't be into him for the coin.

With a $180 million investment to protect, Nike's attempt at commercially rehabilitating Tiger looks reasonable (to Nike). To me it looks like it's time for some serious damage control.

Woods has been the phenomenon of golf for over a decade. Nike has sold a lot of shoes because of this. My guess is that they want to sell a lot more.

But as a golf fanatic buddy of mine (who prefers FootJoy golf shoes) recently said, "I don't watch golf because I love Tiger Woods. I watch Tiger Woods because I love golf."

Tiger Woods Nike commercial: Take one...

V/O "Tiger, you admit to being a heel with no soul, but you still wear Nike golf shoes; why is that?"

TW (archly) "Because Nike's are a step in the right direction when you're laced with humility."

V/O (tongue in cheek) "Nike, the footwear for philanderers getting their careers on track." :D

That is true of your friend, but the numbers show that there a bunch of people who watch golf because they love to watch Tiger Woods. There is no doubt he caused ratings to go up. Imagine if golf had home teams like baseball, football, or basketball, Atlanta Braves, New England Patriots, Los Angeles Lakers. Which ever city had Tiger Woods would fill more stadium seats than other cities. NIKE knows that there is nothing Tiger can say to make him a profitable spokes person. There is only one thing he can do to bring that value back, that is win. If he starts dominating again, his value in advertisement will be right back up there.

I don't think NIKE "knows" anything of the sort. Their goal is to get their product name spinning around, and guess, what, it's even spinning around here at the moment because of Tiger Woods. Lame commercials (that people make fun of) work just as well as brilliant commercials (that people praise) in terms of product recognition. So, notariety works pretty much as well as "Christian value" fame for the company. (Both as long as the quality of the product itself isn't linked to the celebrity attached to the commercial.) All of the values stuff is pretty much just talk for PR purposes. Marketing 101.

On another note, I find it amusing (again) to see Tiger Woods's values being discussed (again) on a Porn discussion board. :D

the woods ad was all over the tv--for comment-- last night. a variety of reactions.

i think what's cool is to see how Tiger Woods' values are set out and consequenced* by those paying him 40 million per year.

i was waiting for [Dad:] "this hurts me more than it hurts you."

I liked Kimmel's "Momma" cut.:D

Tiger was 3 behind in the Masters today so we'll see if this athlete can perform in a circus of his own making.
