The year is 1854.
Queen Victoria sits upon the English throne, and her Commonwealth Empire spans much of the known world.

Scene:- Near Cardiff Docks. The slums had expanded, due to the recent outbreak of cholera.

Matthew James had just left the 'Journeyman', a Pub near the docks, frequented by all manner of patrons.

With the daylight fast fading, he walked briskly towards his quarters, less than ten minutes away.
He felt resplendent in his No.2 Colonel's uniform, of the Coldstream Guards.
Having recently fought at Sebastopol in the Crimea against the Russians he was recovering from his wounds and experiences.

He just walked past the mouth of an alleyway when he thought he heard something strange.
He turned and called out "Hello, is anyone there?"

Isobel Griffiths was a young débutante in the year of her Majesty, 1854. She had been doing her weekly 'round' of the Dock areas in Cardiff and was exhausted and uncomfortable in her highly starched clothes.

It had been a particularly long day. She had been working with her mother bringing food parcels and aid to those less fortunate than herself but around midday her mother suffered from one of her fainting fits and had to be taken home. Mama had left Sally, her ladies maid with Isobel, but the rounds had taken longer than usual and Sally was supposed to be meeting her betrothed that afternoon. Isobel had taken pity on the young girl, and assured her that she would be fine alone, after all, she didnt have much more to do, and she would surely be able to get a carriage home.

Finishing with her last family she took a weary breath as deep as her tightly laced corset would allow, and began to make her way to the main street to attract the attention of a carriage. Suddenly 3 young men, clearly drunk staggered out of an alleyway and almost knocked her over.

"What do you think you are doing" she cried "you almost knocked me over!" They came at her with very strange expressions and some kind of primal instinct kicked in. Isobel turned to run but the men overpowered her and dragged her into the shadows of the alley way. She fought and kicked as hard as she could but they were too strong for her.

Suddenly she heard a voice and saw a figure at the end of alleyway and he called out Hello, is anyone there?. She managed to bite deep into the foul hand pressed tight against her mouth, freeing it enough to let out a high pitched scream and kicked her heels as hard as she could against the wall behind her, before the men managed to subdue her. She hoped it would be enough to indicate she needed help before they managed to do something unspeakable to her

Matthew knew he hadn't imagined that sound, then, as her piercing scream shattered the dusk around him.

He took a few steps into the alley and a guttural voice said:
"This is none of your business. Go on your way and you won't get hurt!"

Matthew could make out four shadows, one which was much smaller than the others, which he assumed was the woman who screamed.

"I heard a woman scream. Now I think it would be in your best interests to let her go." Matthew stated in a calm, level voice.

The same voice replied:
"It would be in your best interests to leave - now!"
"Well then, that will only happen when the woman is safe. What happens until then is up to you. I ask you again - leave her alone and go, unharmed."

The time for talking was obviously at an end, as two of the shadows moved forward, to attack him. The third, the one who spoke stayed back with his arm
around the woman's throat.

The first attacker came in low, aiming at Matthew's ribs, trying to know the wind out of him. He was slow, and Matthew stepped aside and propelled him face-first into the wall, with a soft thud. The man groaned, but didn't go down, instead clutching his nose and screaming "My nose! I'm going to hurt you for this!"

The second attacker didn't waste his opportunity, and came at Matthew with hands outstretched. he managed to gain purchase on his coat and held him whilst the other man threw a punch which connected soundly with Matthew's jaw. Although not very hard, it was well placed.
Matthew saw stars for an instant, before grabbing the man who had hold of his coat and pulling him close, hard, for a head-butt, which split the guy's nose
across the bridge with a satisfying 'crack'.
The man staggered back, soundless, and dropped to his knees, allowing Matthew time to deal with the other assailant.
As the man rushed at him in a blind fury, and threw a punch, which Matthew caught in his hand. A sudden twist was all it took, to tear the tendons at the
man's elbow, and leave him clutching his arm, screaming in pain.
Matthew then took the opportunity to aim left cross and the man's temple, and knock him unconscious.
The other attacker with the broken nose, tried to stagger to his feet, but Matthew was upon him too quickly.
He jabbed a fist into his mouth, loosening some teeth, before following up with his other fist, into the man's already broken nose, which then squashed flat
upon his face. The man slumped to the ground, silently.

Matthew then turned and confronted the thrid man, next to the woman.
"This is your last chance. If you do not leave now, I will hurt you worse than your friends, you impudent whelp! Now leave!"

The other man just laughed. The he pushed the woman aside and drew a knife from beneath his coat."Let's see how good you really are!"

Matthew then drew his coat aside, and from his belt scabbard drew a bayonet, easily four inches long than the man's knife.
"Do you know what this is? It's a Guards' Bayonet. This steel has killed many Russians. I never thought it would kill a Briton, but if you don't leave now, it
shall."

He paused before adding:"Don't be a fool man, you're alone, your friends are
out cold, and you're outclassed. Go now, unharmed!"
The man then looked again at his accomplices, and realised the futility of his situation. He backed away.
"You were lucky today, Guardsman. Next time we meet, you won't be so lucky."
Matthew smiled a thin, cold smile.
"So you say, you cur. If we ever meet again, you shall taste this steel. Now begone!"

The man backed into the shadows and after a few seconds was gone.

Matthew approached the woman, who stood still in shock.
Only then did he realise she was a very young woman.

'Where was her escort? This is no place to be out alone.' He wondered.

After a few seconds, he gave voice to his concerns, adding:
"I am Colonel Matthew James, of Her Majesty's Coldstream Guards, at your service Miss. What's your name, my dear?"

Isobel breathed a sigh of relief as she saw the figure and heard him speak. She continued to struggle against the man holding her but not as violently, her attention was riveted on the scene unfolding before her and the man who was guarding her honour. Her gloved fingers scrabbled at the arm of thug that was wrapped around her neck. Her tight clothing already restricted her breathing and the arm about her throat made her struggle for breath even more.

Isobel gasped and winced as fists met flesh and skin and bone met walls, turning her face from the fight and squeezing her eyes tight shut. She stumbled and ran to the wall, leaning against it and pressing her form as tight and flat to it as she could. Isobel gave a little scream as she saw light glint off the dagger blade as the one remaining man pulled it from beneath his coat. Her hands flew to her mouth and suppressed another cry as the guardsman drew his own shining blade, fascinated and scared out of her wits.

Her knees buckled a little as she saw her attacker disappear into the shadows and her saviour approached her. Even in the dull light she could see that the man was very handsome and his uniform bore no signs of fighting, looking as crisp and fresh as if it was freshly laundered. Suddenly flustered, Isobel smoothed her skirts and hair as well as she could and took a step forward, dipping a small curtsey, her skirts rustling

"I am Miss Isobel Griffiths sir. I am pleased to make your acquaintance and indebted to you for saving my honour' she cleared her throat and her hands folded neatly behind her back, looking around for her basket then returning her attention to the guardsman. "I was out doing charity work with my Mama when she was taken ill, and had to return home. She left her ladies maid with me but I allowed her to leave to keep an.....appointment. I uh" she flushed and her eyes dropped" I thought I would be alright alone. I only had two families left to visit and it is but a short walk to the main street, where I intended to hail a carriage to take me home. Those louts you saved me from almost knocked me over, and then accosted me here. I'm very glad you came along when you did Sir"

Matthew bowed. She was obviously a young woman of good breeding. Her speech alone told him that. Her attire was quite refined as well.
The only thing which was lacking in her in any measure was a sense of danger, and what was about her.

She was very attractive, though. Quite a healthy complexion, and what appeared to be an abundance of cleavage under the dress she was wearing, together with a friendly, trusting face.

"I am pleased to meet you Miss Griffiths. I am glad that I came by when I did, for I fear the outcome of your situation may have been quite different!"

He offered her his arm, and started to walk, seeking to hail a horse & carriage, before he realised he didn't know where she lived!

"I'm sorry, Miss Griffiths, but where do you live? I shall, of course, take you there myself."

Just as he spoke, a carriage rounded the corner, onto their street, and he stepped into the road, to hail it.

Isobel straightened her gloves and looked around for her basket, collecting it and carefully placing her hand on the Colonel's offered arm, her touch as light as a leaf precisely as she had been taught. She was indeed in good health, her complexion smooth and clear. Her figure was full of curves, but also fit and trim, accentuated by the carefully tailored clothes that she wore

"Thank You Colonel James, that would be most kind. I live on the outskirts of Roath, not too far away" She named one of more affluent roads in the area and stood well back from the edge of the road, still nervous her eyes flicking around and suppressing a shudder as a yell filled the air from behind them.

When the carriage stopped, she waited for the man to open the door and offer her his hand, then stepping demurely up into the carriage keeping her feet and ankles covered, settling back on the seat and spreading her skirts around her

"I am sure Mama and Papa will be most grateful to you for your kindness, and we can offer you some sort of reward. You have indeed saved me and that which is most precious to me - my honour"

Matthew opened the door of the carriage and allowed Isobel to alight into it, and settled her skirts, before he too, climbed in.

Matthew gave the driver the address in Roath, and he sat back to enjoy the ride with Isobel.

After a while, Matthew spoke.
"Miss Isobel, may I enquire as to what your Father does?"

After a pause he added.
"Well, I already know what you and your Mother do. As for a reward, it is sufficient that I see you returned safely into the care of your parents."

He looked her up and down then, differently.

"If a reward were forthcoming, I should say I would like to take you to dinner. Would you consider that?"

Isobel sat a little straighter and was about to reply to his first question when he spoke again. She flushed a deep red as she noticed his eyes were roving her figure

"Colonel James, Please!" and turned her face away while she regained her composure.

"I do not think it is appropriate for you to speak so without a chaperone! You would need to discuss with my Mama and Papa about what would be a suitable reward, not me." The delicate flush of pink still adorning her cheeks and her eyes flicking from wall to wall inside the carriage indicated her discomfort, but also inferred that she would not be averse to the idea.

"In answer to your question, My father own the Griffiths butchery. He was worked incredibly hard to build the business up to be as successful as it is. He provides the best cuts of meat in Cardiff, and has even been asked to send his best quality merchandise to Her Majesty Queen Victoria when she has a large party." Isobel was clearly proud of her father, unconsciously she had adjusted her position and was sitting straighter than ever, her head held high and proud as she spoke of his success.

The two sat quietly for the rest of the short ride to Isobel's house. The carriage stopped and Isobel sat quietly, waiting to be handed down from the carriage. As soon as she stepped onto the street the front door of one of the houses flew open and a maid hurried down the steps and stood in front of her, eyes red from crying.

"Sally what is it?" Isobel asked gently, the girl was clearly distressed

"Oh Miss, I'm so glad you are alright, the Mistress has been very worried about you and has been threatening to let me go" these words brought a flood of fresh tears.

Isobel placed a soft hand on the girl's shaking shoulder "Don't worry Sally, I will go and speak to Mama now. She is in the drawing room?" The maid nodded and Isobel turned to the man who had escorted her home "I'm sorry Colonel James, I must deal with this. You are most welcome to come in and wait in the parlour" Isobel made her way towards the house, sighing as she sensed this might be the start of a long battle with her mother

Matthew realised that although he was trying to be polite and courteous, he was still a 'little rough around the edges' from his time in the Crimea.

Isobel, as a well-to-do young lady would not have been prepared for his proposition.

He replied to put her mind at rest, before they arrived at the house:
"I'm sorry, Miss Isobel. I am still growing accustomed to life back here in Britain. My manners must seem somewhat barbaric to you. I meant to compliment you on your style and bearing, not embarrass or insult you."

They then sat in silence until they reached the house, when a young woman rushed out of the house to the carriage, her eyes red with tears.

Apparently, her name was Sally, and Miss Isobel's mother, Mrs. Griffiths, had threatened to dismiss her from the family's service for putting her daughter at risk, by abandoning her in public.

Miss Isobel invited Matthew to await her return in the Parlour, to which he readily agreed. As he walked through the door, it was obvious the family had money.
He had seen splendour in some measure within the Guards' Club, The Officers' Mess and even at Regimental Headquarters.
Although the room lacked the oak panelling endemic in many rooms within the Guards' Environment, this room was pleasantly decorated, with light airy pastel green upon the walls with white contrasting skirting and coving and several paintings, some of which he thought he had even heard of!

Several oversized armchairs lined the walls.
He stopped at the coffee table briefly to pick up today's copy of the Times newspaper, then settled into the comfort of an armchair to read.

Isobel gave a sigh of relief as she entered the cool sanctuary of her home. They had moved to this property a few years ago, and both herself and her mama had worked hard to decorate it in a way that was both welcoming and appealing, and kept up to date with current trends. Having worked so hard to get the house to its current standard, Isobel was proud of her work, and felt a spark of satisfaction every time she entered. The atmosphere of the house was one of calm and sophistication, and she loved being here.

Isobel was very aware that Colonel James was alone in the parlour, and dispatched one of the maids to offer him refreshments, and a promise that she would not be long.

She entered the drawing room to find her mother pacing up and down the cool, dark room. She quickly explained what had happened and calmed her mother down. Just as she had done this her father returned home and she explained the situation to him, pointing out that the Colonel was waiting, alone, in the parlour. Both her mother and father bustled into the receiving room, and Isobel followed quietly, smiling slightly. She felt butterflies begin in her stomach, and her face flush as she entered the presence of the handsome man who had saved her.

Isobel listened to the conversation unfolding before her, keeping herself behind her parents as they spoke to the guardsman, thanking him profusely and offering him a reward. She wanted to see what he would suggest, and more importantly whether her parents would accept his offer. She found the young man very appealing, and she knew her Mama and Papa were considering which young men should accompany her to her débutante ball the following month. Secretly she hoped they would pick this young man, he appealed to her, and she flushed pink, dropping her gaze as that thought crossed her mind.

She became aware that her parents were asking Colonel James to stay for dinner, as it was now very late. They would be honoured, they said, if he would at least consider staying for a small repast and Isobel's heart fluttered as she eagerly waited for his response

Matthew was only waiting for a short while before a maid appeared and offered him a cup of tea, which he gladly accepted.

Soon after, Isobel appeared, accompanied by her parents.

He stood smartly, placed the 'paper beside the chair and introduced himself, then shook hands, it was all very cordial.

When the tale of Isobel's rescue was retold, and her parents offered him a reward, he replied simply:
"No, no, I couldn't accept a reward! As I told Miss Isobel, it is reward enough to see her safely delivered into her parents' house. I was only doing what an Officer and Gentleman should in such circumstances."

After a short pause, he asked:
"If I could ask; I know the Debutantes' Ball is fast approaching. I wonder if I might accompany Miss Isobel? I assume that she has not yet been presented at Court?"

It was only when her parents mentioned it was late, and he should stay for a repast, that he realised he was hungry!

He gladly accepted the invitation to dinner, apologising that he was not correctly attired, but if they would overlook that small matter, he would gladly dine with them (and he would get to gaze at Isobel, when he thought no-one was looking).

As Mr. Griffiths led them through to the Dining Room, he poured Matthew a glass of sweet wine, as an aperitif. The two men toasted each other, and as they all sat around the table, awaited the first course.

Just before it arrived, Mr. Griffiths offered Matthew the honour of proposing a toast.
As is the custom among Officers and Gentlmen, he stood & offered the 'Loyal Toast' in which glasses are raised towards a portrait of the Queen, and he said simply "To Her Majesty Queen Victoria!"
He then sipped from his glass and took his seat.

The food was excellent, and the conversation flowed in an easy manner, back and forth across the table, with Isobel's parents asking about Matthew's career in the Army, and his becoming a Colonel so young.

He explained that the Crimea is a brutal campaign and several Officers fell during the first few attacks from the enemy.
"Russian artillery is something brutal to behold, and fear, if they can find your range." He stated.

He in turn, asked about the family butchery, and how they came to supply the Royal Household with meat.

Several glasses of wine had been consumed, by the time dessert arrived, and Matthew, with lips loosened by alcohol admitted:
"I find Miss Isobel most enchanting. I do hope you will permit me to accompany her to the Debutantes' Ball? I had not considered attending before, as I had no young lady in mind to escort, but now I have met your daughter, I must entreat you to allow her to go with me!"

Her father seemed quite amused by the fact Matthew was so keen, and nodded.

"Colonel James. I can see our daughter has made quite an impression upon you, and it would seem you have made an impression upon her as well. I had not forseen this circumstance, and would have never have considered it otherwise, but as you are an Officer in the Queen's Guards, and a young gentleman of admirable quality from what I have seen tonight, I am quite happy for you to escort her. "

Matthew smiled broadly and thanked Mr. Griffiths, then Mrs. Griffiths as well.
He looked across at Isobel, to see she had a blush upon her cheeks, and was looking downward shyly.

"Miss Isobel?" He asked.
"Now I have your parents' permission, I would ask you to permit me to be your escort to the Debuatantes' Ball next month. Would that be agreeable?"

Isobel found it hard not to let out a little giggle of joy and do a little dance when Colonel James first asked to accompany her to her coming out ball, then agreed to stay for dinner. She followed her parents and Colonel James through into the Dining Room, silently complaining in her head that she had not had time to change her clothes. She was still a little creased and smudged from her fight in the alleyway and would have liked to be in one of her better dresses for a meal with such a lovely man!

At dinner, Papa sat as usual at the head of the table, and Colonel James was seated at the opposite end. Isobel and her Mama were seated in between the two men, one on each side of the oak table

Isobel sat quietly through dinner, listening fascinated and yet horrified, to the tales of the fighting in the Crimea, asking questions here and there. Her parents had educated Isobel well, beyond the basics of etiquette, and things that a young lady should know, such as sewing, reading and writing, music and Languages. She had studied hard and excelled in subjects such as History and worked hard at mathematics and science - all of which was unusual for a young débutante.

Isobel ate daintily and sparsely at that meal, and hardly touched her small glass of wine that she had been permitted. As Colonel James spoke, she could hear a very faint slur to his words and knew if had not been plied with so much fine wine, his tongue may not have been so loose, and for once she was glad of her father's extensive wine cellar. She lay her cutlery down so carefully that it didn't even clink against the fine china.

Isobel turned herself slightly to face Colonel James and nodded slowly "I would be most honoured to be escorted to the débutantes ball with such fine young man" she then turned to face her father "Thank You Papa, for allowing Colonel James to accompany me to such an important event"

Matthew couldn't contain his happiness, when Isobel nodded slowly & said to her father, and to him:
"I would be most honoured to be escorted to the débutantes ball with such fine young man."
He was touched by the love between father & daughter,

When she then turned to face her father and said:
"Thank You Papa, for allowing Colonel James to accompany me to such an important event."
Matthew smiled a great smile, which he hoped seemed sincere, rather than lascivious.

He marvelled at how timing can play such an important part in life's events.
Had he not walked past the mouth of that alleyway at that precise moment, who knows what might have happened to Miss Isobel, and the world would have been a much sadder place for it.

As Mr. Griffiths & Matthew nurtured a glass of port each, and the ladies good naturedly accepted a glass of dessert wine each, to keep them company, they continued to talk.
Considering how little time had passed since he had met this family, he felt very much at ease in their company.

He wanted, no, needed to see her again and soon.

"Mr. & Mrs. Griffiths, I know it would not be appropriate to invite Miss Isobel to dine with me at the Guards' Club without a chaperone; so I wonder if I
could invite you both to dine with us also? Perhaps for Sunday Lunch?"

Isobel found it hard from that point on, to keep her eyes off her prospective partner for the débutantes ball. Her outfit had already been discussed, but she hoped she would be able to talk her mother, and the dress maker, into making some small alterations to it to make her more appealing to Colonel James.

She too was glad with how things had turned out. True, she was stiff and sore, and almost certain that she would be covered in bruises in the morning, she was very glad to have met the young man.

Isobel was beginning to grow tired and the wine, and lack of food was beginning to affect her. Her cheek's had a hint of colour and her mind kept wandering, thinking about the ball a few weeks away.

She heard Colonel James enquire as to whether it would be possible for her to join him for Sunday Lunch and couldn't hide the beginnings of a giggle of delight. She quickly stopped herself and sat straighter in her chair, waiting quietly and looking expectantly at her father. She wanted to beg him to allow the family to dine out, but knew that to do so might disincline him to agree.

From her other side Isobel heard her mother's quiet voice "Well it would allow us to give the maids an afternoon off, with no inconvenience to ourselves" and she gave her mother a quick grateful smile, turning back to her father and very slightly biting on her bottom lip while she waited anxiously for his reply

Matthew also looked to Mr. Griffiths for his reply.

"Yes, my dear. A very good point. Colonel James, we should be delighted to join you for Sunday Lunch. I assume formal attire is required?"

Matthew nodded and replied:
"Yes Sir, the officers dine in full dress uniform, and I shall be no different. A few may have guests present, but I expect that we shall be able to have a table to ourselves, as many of the other men are away on campaign; so we can talk again, in relative privacy. I would enjoy an opportunity to dine with you
all formally.

Matthew smiled when Mrs. Griffiths suggested Sunday Lunch at the Guards' Club would allow the servants the afternoon off with no incovenience to them, as he wanted to ingratiate himself to the family.

With a little colour in her cheeks, Isobel looked even more lovely, and Matthew could feel his body reacting to the more ungentlemanly thoughts he was starting to have about her. He thought it best to arrange the lunch date & leave her in her parents' care.

He drained his glass, as the port was exquisite, then stood and bowed to Mr. Griffiths and then the ladies.

"Thank you all for your kind hospitality, which I hope to repay on Sunday at the Guards' Club. You need only be ready by Noon on Sunday, and I shall have my aide arrange for a carriage to convey you all to meet me. I hope that will be satisfactory?"

As the Griffiths family agreed, and the family's coach was summoned to take Matthew home, he shook their hands, and noticing Isobel's eyes were lowered once more, showing her classic education and upbringing, his heart swelled once more (as well as another portion of his anatomy).

He was escorted to the front door by Mr. Griffiths, who again thanked him for the service to his family and shook his hand firmly and confirmed they would
meet him for Sunday lunch 'come hell or high water'.

As Matthew turned to go, Mr. Griffiths said:
"You know, Colonel James, My daughter is most taken with you. I do not wish for her to be hurt or upset, if you take my meaning. If you can prove to me that your conduct is to remain becoming of an Officer and a Gentleman, I would see fit to approve a longer-term association. Do we understand one another?"

Matthew, although pleasantly refreshed and fed, was aware enough of the import of this question, and the fact it had been asked away from the ladies.

"Mr. Griffiths. I feel I can speak to you candidly.
Until I met your daughter this afternoon, I was not looking to settle down and take a wife, but seeing the peril your daughter found herself in, something inside me changed. I want to care for her, love and cherish her. I have never been in this situation either, and appreciate that she is young, but she is full of
kindness, spirit and intelligence. As an Officer's wife, I feel she would be able to support me in my service to Queen & Country. I hope you do not think me presumptuous, when I say this, but tonight, as we dined, Miss Isobel stole my heart!"

He smiled sincerely and the two men shook hands, firmly but with a little added something - could it be friendship?

The family's coach then pulled up, and Matthew gathered his coat around him, as the night's weather had turned a mite hostile, as he dashed for the
welcoming shelter of the coach and the ride home.

He waved to Isobel's father, as the coach drew away, and then settled back to daydream about what a delightful body hid under those elaborate dresses and what thoughts danced behind those beautiful eyes.

A smile spread across Isobel's delicate features as her father agreed to lunch at the Guard's club, and she didn't bother to hide it this time. It was obvious that she was struggling to keep her body still in her seat though. Her wine glass sat forgotten on a nearby table and her fingers smoothed and fiddled with the skirt of her dress. Isobel stood when Colonel James stood, and gave him a little curtsey as he took her hand. As soon as the door had shut behind her father, Isobel flew to her mother's side and embraced her "Oh Mama, isn't he wonderful" she gushed. She could hear the murmur of voices in the hall way and wondered what her father and the young man were talking about

Isobel sank to her knees as her mother sat once more to finish her wine "What do you think I should wear on Sunday Mama?"

Mrs Griffiths looked down into her daughter's shining eyes and knew that the young girl was experiencing strong feelings for her saviour. "Isobel, I will not talk about that tonight, you have been through quite enough today. We will discuss it tomorrow. Now go upstairs. I have ordered that a hot bath be drawn for you before bed. You need a good night's rest"

Isobel smiled dreamily and rose "Yes Mama" she answered and made her way up the stairs to her room where a tub of steaming water was waiting before the fire. She practically danced through her bath and evening toilette, thinking that she would never fall asleep she was so excited. Despite her excitement, her body was so tired that she fell into dreams almost as soon as her head hit the pillow, a smile spreading across her face as she dreamt of her hero

Matthew spent most of Saturday taking care of the few administrative tasks he had been assigned as part of his recuperation.

He stopped for breaks frequently and daydreamed about Miss Isobel. Her smile was absolutely captivating!

He also loved the way she lowered her eyes demurely, when something embarassed her. The fierce red glow on her porcelain white skin when she blushed was so becoming!

He had left a message for Captain McWinter to reserve a table for four for Sunday Lunch in the Club.
Captain McWinter was the Staff Steward, who ran the Guards' Club. He knew that 'his' Officers, as he thought of them, relied upon him and his staff to look after them and their guests to the best of their ability.

Matthew was still sat at his desk, looking at despatches from the front for news of the men he served with, when Major Hughes, his roommate in the single men's quarters limped in and flopped down into an armchair.

''That leg still hurting, John?'' He asked.
''Yes, Matthew. I'll go & see the surgeon & ask for some tincture to help me.'' The younger man replied.

John Hughes had been commanding a company of guardsmen assaulting a battery of russian guns, which had then turned on him and his men. He was lucky, the single pellet of grape shot had gone through his leg, taking a lot of the thigh with it, but amazingly, leaving the bone intact.
The three other men with him were not so lucky. Grape shot is when a cannon is used as a shotgun - the blast at short range completely vapourized them. Not a trace of them could be found, other than pieces of their uniforms.

John looked over and said ''So, you've invited Annabel & her parents for lunch tomorrow, then?''

''Yes John, and her name is Isobel.
Isobel, not Annabel.''

John smiled. His friend's feelings for this girl must be strong. He hadn't seen him act like this before!

''Right you are, Matthew, right you are.'' He replied.

The two men dined together and chatted about the circumstances of Isobel’s rescue and the subsequent meeting with her parents, as well as the Sunday Lunch appointment tomorrow.

As John wasn’t planning on attending the formal Sunday Lunch, so he helped Matthew prepare the various elements of his uniform. The boots were spotless, polished to perfection, the silver buttons in the shape of the Garter Star, the symbol of the ‘Royal Order of the Knights of the Garter’; arranged in pairs looked as good as new.
The scarlet of his tunic was resplendent, and the peak of his Officer’s cap was so clean you could see your face in it!

The two men carefully packed everything away into Matthew’s wardrobe, in readiness for dinner tomorrow.

They both decided to retire early, so after evening prayers with the Regimental Chaplain, they poured a couple of glasses of brandy and sat savouring the warming liquer together, before running a hot shower and then going to bed.

On the Sunday morning they both rose promptly and performed their morning ablutions before they breakfasted in the Officers’ Mess.
They then headed over to the Chapel for the Sunday morning service and then back to their room, so Matthew could begin to get ready.
His aide, Sergeant Watson, reported to him that he was ready to collect Miss Isobel and her parents from the address he had been given. Matthew happily dismissed him to carry out that task.
He carefully pulled on all the elements of his uniform, and made sure everything sat where it should, whilst stood in front of the mirror.

John stood back and smiled, then said with approval:
“If her parents don’t approve of your association with Miss Isobel when they see you in that lot, Sir, it just doesn’t bear thinking about!”
As Matthew walked over to the Guards’ Club, he wondered what Miss Isobel would be wearing.
He met Captain McWinter, who escorted him through the lavish hallway with its white-veined black marble floor, and oak panelled walls, with various portraits which hung in heavy gilded frames all along both walls. They depicted past Colonels of the Regiment and heroes of the numerous battles in which the regiment had fought over the years. The Captain opened the huge iron-banded oak double-doors, and admitted him to the dining room.

At last they came to his table, and a young private saluted and introduced himself, saying that he would be his steward for this lunch meeting. Matthew nodded and introduced himself in return and asked for a glass of water, whilst he waited for his guests.

Meanwhile Sergeant Watson had arrived at the Griffiths residence and alighted from the driver’s platform of the coach and marched smartly up the garden path. A lady in the house next-door was just coming outside, when she saw him and gasped.
“Good-day to you Ma’am!” He announced, in a broad Someerset accent, as he carried on striding towards the front door. He was nearly seven feet tall, when he wore his bearskin on top of his head.

He loudly knocked on the door with the huge lion-shaped brass knocker and waited for the summons to be answered.

Isobel woke early on the Saturday morning and almost immediately began her preparations for the following day. She wanted to look her absolute best. After barely eating at breakfast she flew back up to her closet, where she pored over her dresses with her mother and Sally, who was still somewhat subdued. Isobel’s mother had agreed to keep Sally on, but as a punishment that week’s wages would be docked 1 shilling.

After trying on what seemed like every single dress in her wardrobe, she settled on a pale blue taffeta, one of her best dresses and it was sent away with Sally to be cleaned and pressed ready for the following day. Her white boots were also sent for cleaning and Isobel set about washing her hair using water scented with rose petals, something her mother only ever allowed on special occasions. Once washed, her hair was pinned up so it would curl and Mama sent Isobel to rest but she was too excited. She tried reclining on her day bed and reading one of her favourite books but she just could not settle. Eventually her mother gently ushered her into the parlour and sat her in the window seat with some embroidery which was slightly more successful, but only because she was able to talk to her mother. Isobel spoke at length about how wonderful Colonel James was and Isobel’s mother smiled slightly, watching her daughter light up as she spoke of the young man. Early in the evening, Isobel retired to bed but found she couldn’t sleep. She let her thoughts wander, imagining what the Guards club would be like and what Colonel James would be wearing. She fell asleep, once more, with a smile on her face.

She rose early on Sunday morning and ordered a hot bath, again scented with rose petals and soaked for a good hour before dressing in what she called her ‘church clothes’. The family breakfasted together and travelled to the nearby church. Isobel was very distracted and her Mama had to keep discreetly nudging her back to attention. They strolled home at what Isobel felt was far too slow of a pace!

When they arrived back at their house, Isobel hurried upstairs and rang for a maid to help her change, shedding her garments and pulling on the dress carefully so as not to crease it. She then made the girl pin her hair up while she stood, screeching at her when she got too close. She adorned herself with a small amount of jewellery, a lace shawl and some white kid gloves, took a deep breath and proceeded down the grand staircase. Isobel had just reached the bottom and was about to enter the drawing room where she could hear her parents voices murmuring when there was a loud knock on the front door. She stood back and let the butler open the door, gasping as she saw the huge hulking shadow of a man in uniform.
She heard the man announce himself and his purpose in his deep rolling accent “Sergeant Watson miss. I’m here to escort Mr and Mrs Griffiths, and Miss Isobel Griffiths to the Guard’s club for Sunday Lunch”. The butler looked suitably impressed and hurried to tell the family, who made their way promptly to the carriage under the curious glances and peers of their neighbours.

Isobel stared out of the window for the whole duration of the short journey to the guards club. She could hear her parents talking beside her but wasn’t listening to their conversation. When the carriage stopped, she waited for them to alight first, then taking Sergeant Watson’s hand with a murmured “Thank You” as he handed her down from the carriage. She smoothed her skirts down with a rustle and took a deep breath, following her parents respectfully into the grand building.

Isobel noted the the surroundings were very ornate, and there were a great many paintings adorning the walls, she assumed of people who had been important at one time or another. It was a short walk to the formal dining room of the club and she followed their escort in a rustle of fabric. A very faint flush coloured her cheeks as they entered the room and many heads turned to see who was entering. Looking around she noticed there weren't many other families dining here, the room was a sea of different military dress uniforms.

She did her best to take in all of the decorations as they were escorted to their table but her mind was distracted, and the butterflies in her stomach jumped a little as she espied Colonel James over her father’s shoulder.

Matthew took another sip from his glass of water as he waited for his guests to arrive. Once again he checked that his collar was buttoned correctly and that his hair was brushed properly and the parting was straight and neat.

He was usually the cool, calm, collected type of man, but Miss Isobel stirred something deep within him, and he wasn’t sure that he could guarantee behaving like a gentleman if he were left alone with her.

Captain McWinter had met the Griggith family at the entrance to the Guards’ Club, and a steward had relieved them of their overcoats and in Isobel’s case, her lace shawl & gloves. The captain then led them down the coridoor to the Dining Room.

Captain McWinter opened the stout oak doors, and escorted his guests over to his table. Mr. and Mrs. Griffiths had dressed formally as he would expect; Mr. Griffiths in a black three-piece-suit, with a white shirt the collar of which was heavily starched, & a mid-grey checked – patterned cravat.
Mrs. Griffiths wore an ivory gown with lace frills at the neck and cuffs. Then Matthew turned his attention to Isobel. She looked breathtaking, in her pale blue taffeta dress. Her hair was styled to sit atop her head, which left her face free of the cover of any hair, so everyone could admire her beauty. Her cheeks had a hint of rouge, and so, he thought did her lips. She looked so coquettish, peeking over her father’s shoulder at him, he couldn’t help but smile.
He stood from his seat at the table and extended his hand to Mr. and Mrs. Griffiths, then to Isobel, as she gracefully stepped from behind her father, and took Matthew’s outstretched hand. He squeezed, ever so gently, and then pulled out a seat next to him for Isobel to sit, as her father did for his wife. A rustle of skirts accompanied the manoeuvre.

“I am so glad you could join me for lunch.” Matthew stated. “I hope that Sergeant Watson wasn’t too austere for you. He’s a good man – save my life twice in the Crimea.”
Mr Griffiths replied for them all. “No, no….not at all. Very pleasant. He’s a very big, and capable man. Good solid Guardsman, as he should be!”
Matthew smiled before turning to Isobel.
“May I say, Miss Isobel, that you look divine?” After a pause he added “As do you, Mrs. Griffiths.”
Both women smiled and thanked him. Isobel blushed.
At this point the steward approached the table and took orders for aperitifs & left menus for them all to examine.
Small talk followed, all the while, Matthew & Isobel gazed at each other in between conversations about the weather, what was the latest news from ‘The Front’, latest fashions, which Mr. Griffiths scoffed at.
The steward then returned and took their orders for the first two courses.

The conversation was cordial, light-hearted and polite. All Matthew wanted was to spend time alone with Isobel, and kiss those faintly-red lips, taste her, smell her perfume up close.
As they ate their starters, Matthew had glanced around when the opportunity arose, and noted with satisfaction that several of the other officers had also been admiring Isobel.
He even heard two men talking about them, and enjoyed the comments about her obvious ‘good breeding and admirable disposition’.
The steward appeared again to whisk away their empty plates and moments later returned with their main courses.
Mr. and Mrs. Griffiths asked him a couple of times throughout the meal, about his career in the army and where he saw it going.
Each time, he replied simply to say that it depended on where the army sent him, once he was given a clean bill of health which should be in a few weeks. His shrapnel wound was healing nicely and the doctors were hopeful he would make a full recovery and return to active duty.

The wine was flowing freely and Mr. Griffiths, having availed himself of the Guards’ hospitality, was enjoying himself thoroughly, to the point he said as much and hinted that he would welcome the opportunity to dine with Matthew again.
Matthew thanked him for his good company, and once the ladies had excused themselves to visit the powder room, asked if he might ask an important question of Mr. Griffiths.
“Go ahead, Colonel James, by all means.” Mr. Griffiths replied.
“As well as escorting Miss Isobel to the débutantes ball I should like to ask your permission to court her. I find her most enchanting and have spoken to another Officer here who has remarked that it would be most becoming for me to take a wife, as an Officer in Her Majesty’s Guards, particularly one as pretty and well educated as Miss Isobel.”
Mr Griffiths smiled and leaned back in his chair.
“My wife and I had discussed this last night. We felt that you might ask. Your conduct thus far has been exemplary and I cannot see any reason why I should refuse you. Isobel says she is her own woman, at least in her own mind, and she has admitted to my wife, rather than me, you understand that she feels the same way about you.”
After a short pause, to allow Matthew to absorb this information, he continued:
“Do not discuss this today. I will speak to my wife later. I shall let you know the outcome as soon as I can.”
“Thank You, Sir. I am most obliged.” Matthew replied, his heart soaring.
Just then the ladies returned to the table and Mr. Griffiths picked up the menu the steward had left to ponder over which dessert he would order.

Isobel was outwardly calm as they wove their way through the halls and then the tables in the dining hall to meet Colonel James but inwardly she was a bag of nerves. She clasped her slightly shaking hands together at waist height. Her eyes met those of Colonel James over her father’s shoulder and she flushed, dropping her head a little.

As the guardsman reached for her hand, and then squeezed, Isobel had to suppress a little giggle as she was seated beside him. She could feel the eyes of the room directed to herself and her family, and wondered why more families and friends didn’t dine at the club.

Isobel blushed as Colonel James complimented her choice of dress and replied after a quick glance to her parents “Thank you Colonel, you look very dashing yourself”. She could feel the man’s eyes on her, looking at her hungrily which sent an odd – but not entirely unpleasureable sensation through her body. His glances also started a flash of heat between her legs, which nearly made her squirm. Not having experienced anything of the like before, she was caught a bit off guard but squeezed her legs together and ignored the sensation, guessing it was something that was not ladylike.

She sat quietly at first, listening to the conversation but adding a word or two here or an opinion there as she grew more relaxed and comfortable. Each time her parents inquired about Matthew’s prospects she had to fight an urge to jump up and tell her parents to be more discreet. She flushed each time the subject came up but luckily was able to dip her head and concentrate on her food to hide her embarrassment.

Isobel had hardly touched her wine, having kept instead to the iced water and was a little reluctant to leave the table when her mother rose to visit the powder room. When they got there though she confided her feelings to her mother “Oh Mama he is SO handsome in his uniform!” she exclaimed, clasping her hands to her chest “Do you think he will want to court me?” her grey eyes sparkled with excitement and anticipation and she practically danced on the spot. When the women returned to the table though, Isobel had regained her composure and she settled back in her seat and perused the dessert menu, selecting something disgustingly sweet.

She could tell that some kind of conversation had taken place, there was an air of expectancy and tension at the table and Isobel could not work out what on earth the pair had been talking about and hoped it wouldn’t be something that would jeopardize her chances of courting and partnering him at the debutante’s ball. Isobel was finding that the more time she spent in the company of Colonel Matthew James, the more time she wanted to spend with him.

Their desserts arrived and the group began to eat, continuing with the light conversation but she noticed that her parent’s kept giving one another meaningful glances and Isobel was dying to ask them what was going on. She hated secrets. She also wondered what would happen after the meal. Normally the men retired to a smoking room and the women to the parlour, but she wasn’t sure if it would be the same here. As the desserts were gradually finished Isobel felt a spark of sadness, knowing that very soon she would have to go home with her parents, and leave the company of Colonel James

Matthew was gratified that Isobel was able to return his compliment about her beautiful dress and how well she wore it - it showed that she had spirit, confidence and poise to act in public.

He had noticed a very subtle change in mood when the ladies returned from the powder room. Isobel seemed a little flushed and Mrs. Griffiths was smiling - nothing unusual in that by itself, as she was a jovial woman, but he felt they had spoken about him in the powder room, and some decision had been reached.

He stood and moved Isobel's chair back for her to sit, then slid it under her, so she was comfortable.

They enjoyed their desserts in relative peace, the gentle clinking sound of the silverware against bone china, being the most noticeable sound, with a murmur of conversation from around the room in the background.

Matthew had eyes only for Isobel and she for him. With dessert finished, the steward came to offer dessert wines, or coffee, with port for the gentlemen and sherry for the ladies.

"Excuse me?" said a voice from behind him, as Matthew gazed down into Isobel's eyes.
He turned around to see his room-mate, John stood there, leaning heavily upon his walking stick.
Matthew's smile grew even wider, as he welcomed his friend.

"John - I thought you weren't dining today?"
"I'm not, Matthew - but I had to come and take a look at this lovely young woman you told me about. Your description has not done her justice, old man!"

Matthew turned back to his guests.
"Mr. & Mrs. Griffiths, Miss Isobel Griffiths, may I introduce my good friend, Major John Hughes, recently wounded in the Crimea, and recovering with me for company?"
Matthew gestured to each of them in turn as he introduced them. John walked around the table and shook hands with each of them.

Matthew then indicated to John to sit in his chair, whilst he stood between his and Isobel's chairs.

"I'm sorry my friend, but I had to see her." John turned to Mr. and Mrs. Griffiths and said:
"Do you realise your daughter has stolen my friend's heart? She is all he speaks of, and now I understand why. She is certainly very beautiful!"
Matthew saw Isobel blush, as John leant a little closer and said conspiratorially "You know, Miss Isobel, you could do far worse than Matthew here, for a husband?"
"John?!" exclaimed Matthew partly in embarrassment, but also because he didn't want Isobel to realise he had thought of her in those terms, quite yet.
"I am going to escort Miss Isobel to the Debutante's Ball next month." Matthew stated to him proudly.
"splendid! Have you announced it?"
"No - Mr. Griffiths has only just confirmed that he has accepted my petition to escort her."
"No time like the present, my friend!" John said as he stood.

He took a teaspoon and gently tapped it against a bowl of sugar, make a tinkling sound.
"Ladies & Gentlemen - as is the custom in this Officers' Club; whenever an Officer makes a successul petition to escort a young lady to the Debutantes' Ball, it is announced before the full company. As they are overseas, I feel I can announce this now."
John clapped his hand on Matthew's shoulder.
"My good friend, Colonel Matthew James, has been formally accepted as escort to Miss Isobel Griffiths, for next month's Debutantes' Ball!"
John then indicated Isobel as well. Matthew then moved and stood behind Isobel and placed his hands gently upon her shoulders, smiling even more broadly now.
Although the room was nowhere near full, thunderous applause broke out and several of the other Officers raised their glasses to the young 'couple'.

Once the tumult had died down, and people returned to their desserts and liqueurs, John sat down and took a sip from Matthew's port.
"Mmm very good, Colonel. But then you have impeccable taste - in all things!" He smiled mischieviously, then laughed.

John then stood up, clapping him Matthew on the back.
"I must go. It was a pleasure to have met you all. Please forgive me for the interruption."
He bowed to the ladies and shook Mr. Griffiths' hand, and departed, again leaning heavily upon his walking stick.

"I hope you will forgive John - his curiosity sometimes gets the better of him, but he's a good man, and a loyal friend."

Matthew then sat back down next to Isobel, and placed his hand over hers, upon the table.

Isobel had been brought up and educated well and had thrived under the love and guidance of her parents. They had instilled an innate confidence in her and while she could be shy in the presence of a well turned out gentleman, she was certain of her own intelligence and beauty.

She smiled and nodded her thanks to Colonel James as he rose on her return from the powder room to reseat her. She ate quietly and delicately, casting glances at Colonel James, and her parents, as if assessing their opinions on her hero. When their eyes met, Isobel dropped her gaze a little embarrassed that she had been caught staring at someone of the opposite sex.

She jumped slightly, the motion so small it was nearly invisible, as a deep voice rumbled behind them. She turned slightly in her seat and saw a second guardsman towering over her, albeit leaning on a sturdy stick. She dabbed at her mouth with her napkin and dropped her hands to her lap and dipped her head, skin pinkening slightly as the new arrival complimented her.

As Matthew introduced each family member they stood and shook hands, bowing or curtseying to the Major as he processed around the table. Isobel smiled up at Matthew as he gave his seat up to the Major. She look to her parents as the man spoke and noticed them glance at each other and smile before John turned his head to her and leaned in and spoke to her.

She gave a little giggle and dipped her head lower, hiding her blush and smoothing her skirt with her delicate fingers. Isobel gasped and blushed when John stood and announced to the whole room that Matthew would be escorting her to the debutantes ball, resulting in a din of applause. She wanted to dip her head to hide her flush and embarrassment but she knew that would be rude so she sat straight and proud, her chin lifted high and smiled as her gaze flicked around the room.

Isobel watched as Matthew took a few steps sideways and moved to stand behind her. She gave a little shiver of delight and her breath came a little quicker as his hands descended to her slender shoulders and rested there. The warm heaviness of a man’s hands dwarfing her shoulders was a new experience and she found it to be a sensation she rather enjoyed and Isobel had to work hard not to squirm in her seat. She kept her eyes fixed on the table but a small smile played around her lips.

She watched the interchange between the two friends and saw the closeness and affection between the two as the Major bantered and teased Matthew lightly. She stood and curtseyed low as the injured man rose, clapped his friend on the back and began to make his way from the dining hall. “It was lovely to meet you too Major Hughes. I hope that your recovery continues swiftly” Isobel spoke as she rose from the curtsey.

She hid a smile as Matthew spoke begging forgiveness for the forwardness of his friend. Both she and Matthew settled back in their respective seats though Isobel took the opportunity to shuffle her own chair ever so slightly closer to the man beside her.

Mr Griffiths smiled benevolently and answered “Do not worry about it Matthew. He is a fine fine man and he obviously thinks highly of you and that is very reassuring to both myself and Isobel’s mother. She is very dear to us, as I am sure you realise and we would not want her to be toyed with”.

As Matthew's large hand lifted and rested over her own much smaller one, Isobel darted a look at her parents, seeking approval. Her mother nodded slightly and she could see a slight smile on her father’s face. Isobel smiled widely and relaxed, wiggling her fingers slightly in the warm cocoon of Matthew’s palm.

Time flew past far too quickly for Isobel’s liking and it was soon time for the Griffiths family to leave and return home. The whole party rose from the table and wound their way through the dining hall to the front reception where the outer clothes of the Griffiths family were brought to each respective member and they headed outside to the waiting carriage. Isobel dawdled as much as she dared on her way to the carriage, keeping her hand in Matthew’s grasp as long as she could before he handed her up into the waiting vehicle. Just as they were about to start off she spoke boldly to him “I had a lovely time today Colonel James. I think I speak for my entire family when I sincerely thank you for the invitation to dinner. I hope that we can meet again before the debutantes ball next month” her chin lifted slightly defiantly as her mother gave a gasp of horror at her daughter’s boldness and her father gave a low chuckle of amusement. “Please forgive Isobel, Matthew. She often speaks her mind and it appears that she is as infatuated by you, as you are with her." He laughed and patted his daughter affectionately on the knee as the driver prepared the horses to begin the short journey back to the Griffiths’ house.

Matthew smiled broadly as he replied to Mr. Griffiths.
"Well, Sir, I am glad that Miss Isobel feels as I do. I am relieved, if I could be so candid, as I would hate to misplace my affections and find my attention unwanted."

Mr Griffiths chuckled again and clapped Matthew upon his shoulder.
"No need to worry about that. A Colonel in the Guards? A fine catch for any woman. You need not worry - just let time take its course. Let us not rush things. Love will blossom in time, given enough room and sustenance!"

Eventually, after dawdling as much as he dared, with Isobel, Matthew raised his hand, with Isobel's smaller one within it, and gently kissed the back of her hand, and looked her in the eye as he did so. He smiled as she did.
"I am glad you enjoy Lunch here, with me. I would like to do this again, perhaps after the Debutantes' Ball? I shall see you again when I arrive to escort you, Miss Isobel, if not before."

Matthew then released her hand and shook Mr. Griffiths' hand, before taking Mrs. Griffiths hand and kissing it in the same fashion as her daughter's.

He raised a hand and waved as they climbed aboard the carriage and Sgt. Watson tapped his crop against the lead horse and the carriage pulled away, into the late afternoon.

Matthew wandered back inside, to order a glass of brandy, and savour the warm glow of his time with Miss Isobel, as he enjoyed the brandy, together with his memories of lunch with her and her family.

OOC:
Fast Forward two weeks, to a fortnight before the Debutantes' Ball.

Matthew was strolling along the arcades and looking for a suitable gift for Miss Isobel. He had heard that this year, it was the done thing to buy a pair of pearl earrings for a young lady to show your admiration for her.
He finally saw the shop he was looking for, and he strode purposefully towards it, he spied none other than Miss Isobel, and her Mother, stepping out from the dressmakers further down the street.
Isobel looked divine. She wore a dark red velvet cloak, over a burgundy tafetta type dress, with black leather boots.
Her mother was wearing a matching outfit in dark blue.

Matthew broke his stride, to take in her beauty.
Just at that moment, she turned and looked at him; then gently tapping her mother upon the arm, she gestured toward him, and they both started to walk in his direction.

Matthew stepped out again, raising his Officer's cap in salute, and smiled broadly as he met them both.

"Ladies! What a pleasant surprise!"
He reached out and shook both their hands, raising them to kiss them as he did so.

"I see you have been to the dressmakers. I hope everything is in order for the Debutantes' Ball?"

Isobel seemed to have momentarily lost her voice, but her mother responded.
"Everything is fine, Colonel James. With a dress such as this, several fittings are taken to ensure the gown will fit perfectly on the night."

He nodded in understanding.

The Griffiths family arrived home and bid farewell to their driver. Isobel’s mother tasked her with embroidering a tapestry that mother and daughter were working on as a decorative piece for the house. Isobel found it hard to concentrate, her mind flicking backwards to the wonderful meal they had just eaten and forwards to the date of the debutantes ball. She retired early that night, the excitement of the last few days catching up with her and that night Isobel slept deep and long, waking only late the following morning.

The following two weeks passed much as normal. Mrs Griffiths took Isobel on their usual charity rounds, but this time they took the gardener instead of a ladies maid and as a deterrent to any prospective ambushers and Mrs Griffiths refused to let her daughter go when on the streets. Isobel too was slightly nervous and jumped at any sound. They received visitors, read and worked on their embroidery. The time came around for another dress fitting and mother and daughter took the opportunity to do some shopping at the same time.

Isobel had all but given up on the idea of seeing Colonel James before the debutantes ball and so, when they saw him as they emerged from the dressmakers, she froze briefly and had to clutch at her mother’s arm to stop herself from running down the street and flinging herself into his arms!

“Please Mama, can we just go and SPEAK to him” she begged her mother who was unsure, they had a lunch date to attend, and were running the risk of being more than fashionably late. Mrs Griffiths acquiesced and the two females headed in his direction. They both delivered neat curtseys, Isobel’s slightly deeper than her mother’s as Colonel James doffed his cap. As she rose she smiled brightly at the man in uniform before them and opened her mouth to respond but no sound came out! She flushed and turned to her mother to answer while she gathered herself together.

She sighed “There are at least another two fittings to ensure a perfect fit too” Isobel looked slightly fed up at that idea “I don’t mind them so much but it gets awfully boring standing there having people push and pull at you and catching you with pins!”

“Isobel!” exclaimed her mother scandalised “Remember where you are and what the dress is for” and she gave her daughter a meaningful look “I’m sorry Mama” Isobel replied, trying to look contrite and ashamed but not quite managing it. There was a hint of cheekiness in her eyes.

“What brings you to this part of town Colonel James?” she asked softly. Barely visible under her red velvet cloak she was elbowing her mother slightly, as if encouraging her to say something. After a few moments Mrs Griffiths shot a look to her errant daughter before turning back to the guardsman with a small smile. “Well Colonel James, it was very pleasant to meet you again but we must be away. Isobel and I have a prior engagement that we must attend and we are already running late” Isobel began to protest “No Isobel” snapped her mother “We MUST go, and now. I am sorry Colonel, my daughter appears to have forgotten her place. I am sure though that both Mr Griffiths and myself would be glad to take a turn around the park with yourself and Isobel before the ball if you are agreeable. It would give us a chance to learn a little more about yourself.”

Mrs Griffiths signalled to their carriage and was handed up into the compartment with a rustle of fabric. Isobel followed reluctantly and as the driver closed the door she leant out of the window slightly “Oh please say you will Colonel” she begged him quietly, despite a disapproving look from her mother

Matthew had to struggle not to smile at Isobel's impetuous outburst in front of her mother, and her mother's reaction to it.

Isobel was obvious chafing under the attentions of the dressmakers and the waiting for the Debutantes' Ball.

When Isobel asked why Matthew was in that part of town, it made him pause for thought before replying.

He didn't want to be specific, but he had to give some reason.
"I wanted to browse for soem cufflinks for me, and perhaps a gift for you, something becoming for such an occasion and a reflection of your beauty, Miss Isobel."

Matthew smiled and grinned disarmingly at his admission.

After Mrs. Griffiths mentioned the possibility of "a turn around the park with yourself and Isobel before the ball if you are agreeable."

Matthew agreed it would give him a chance to tell them more about himself.

He thought it prudent to take their leave, to allow the ladies to continue on to their lunch enagagement.

"Ladies, I fear I have delayed you too long already. It was a pleasant surprise to encounter you here. I would love to visit the Park with you soon."

Matthew raised his cap in salute, and bowed low, before their carriage approached, to whisk them away.
