Thud.

"What was that sound?"

Well, I got past the title or opening line this time before confused by the myriad possibilities.
Who is speaking? To whom are they speaking?
Is in in bed in th e middle of the night?
In the office?
In the sun room in mid day?
In the forest?
Can I avoid making this an incest tale?
Why am I avoiding incest?
So we ever find out what the thus was?

There aren't that many kindly troll stories on here. And of course, being trolls, you can make a couple quietly placed references to Pratchett's "Thud".

which I have never read.

It's a fantasy-world murder-mystery-slash-political-drama, revolving around the troll and dwarf communities of a city. And it begins with the line "Thud!" from memory. Though "Thud" is also a board game heavily featured in all the Discworld novels, and is... Somewhat, but not really, like chess.

If that's at all intriguing, there's both novel and graphic novel versions, probably in your local library. (And in a half dozen languages).

It is the sound of my date fainting and falling to the floor when she sees the size of my cock.
