Throwing and fetching

My dog and I have been on a throwing and fetching hiatus because I have been so busy with work and school. He has been busy digging holes in the yard. I love throwing a chew toy for him and he loves retrieving it, but he doesn't like giving it back to me. I have gotten to the point now that when i don't get it back, why should i throw. He holds on to the chew toy and growls. He never gives me gives it back. What can i do to get him to try and like it?

Look at this scenario from your dog's perspective. Where is the pay off for giving you back the toy - especially if you're just going to throw it away again?

You should get naked after all isn't that how you keep him right? Bring him a ball and drop it in front of him. He does nothing. You dig a hole in the soft sand and go to sleep in hopes he will let you chase the ball later.
