Name: Ruthie Davenport
Age: 19
Height: 5'7
Weight: 122 lbs
"I understand, mom, but I don't really care what those old ladies at your church think," Ruthie said into her cell phone as she walked from the kitchen to the living room carrying a bag of chips and a coke in her other hand. "Why would you tell them to begin with? It's none of their business who I'm sharing a house with."
As the slender redhead listened to her mother's response, she sat down on the second hand couch, folding her legs up underneath her indian style. Setting the cold bottle of coke between her legs, Ruthie pried open the small bag of chips and reached in to the bag. "Mom...mom...I promise that Chris and Brad are nice guys, and when you come down to visit this summer you can meet them and give them the third degree, whatever you need to be comfortable with this."
As Ruthie's mother began to speak again, the nineteen year old leaned back and crunched her way through several chips. She didn't really blame her mother for being concerned. Just a year ago she had to adjust to the thought of her only daughter moving to the other side of the country to attend college, and now she was having to accept the fact that Ruthie had moved out of the dorms and was sharing a house with two guys. Considering how over protective her mom had been most of her life, the redhead was surprised she hadn't taken it harder when she broke the news to her a month ago. Granted, they had been through this same conversation several times since, but they seemed to be becoming less frequent and less lengthy at this point.
The truth was, Ruthie hadn't been thrilled with the idea of living with two strangers herself, let alone guys, but the opportunity was just too good to pass up. The house that Chris and Brad had been sharing while they attended college was perfectly located so that Ruthie could walk to classes and to work, plus the rent was low enough that she could actually afford it.
And she was starting to get used to having male roommates. The biggest adjustment Ruthie had to make was not walking around half naked like she was used to doing at home, or in the all-female dorm she had spent her freshman year in. After the first couple of awkward stares from one of the guys when she walked through the room in her panties, she quickly realized that was a no-go. After that it was just learning to accept the random pieces of dirty clothing laying in unusual locations, or the late night x-box marathons. Nothing she couldn't handle.
"What? No mom, I am not 'hooking up' with one of my roommates," the redhead replied, nearly spitting out the sip of coke she had just taken. As she sat the coke back down between her legs, Ruthie brushed crumbs from her blue jeans and her tight, black tank top. "Yes, I promise that there is nothing going on, okay? Look, I need to go. I've got a lot of homework to do...I love you, too. I'll call you in a couple of days."
Ruthie had actually finished all of her readings for class, but she'd never been very good at lying to her mother, or very comfortable with the idea, so it was either make an excuse to get off the phone or try to change the subject. Not that there was anything going on between her and one of her roommates, well, nothing serious, anyway. About a week ago, she and Chris had been home alone while Brad was at work and after a few beers, they had made out on the couch.
That wasn't really a big deal, the teenager told herself as she ran a hand through her long, red hair. Just like it wasn't really a big deal when the two of them had made out two nights ago either. Just like it wasn't a big deal that Brad had to work tonight and Chris and Ruthie would have the house to themselves once again. No big deal, she told herself again as she glanced down at the time on her phone wondering how much longer it would be before Chris arrived home.
