A physician was consulted about what contributes the most to an early death. Research shows that it’s not heart disease, drugs, murder, accidents, diabetes, cancer, obesity, or any condition too big for anyone to get under control. The leading cause of an early death is loneliness. It’s that simple.

Do you know people who are lonely, feel unloved, are homebound, or have limited physical touch or interaction? You could be the one to add years to their lives, or at least, life to their years.

Lonely people are everywhere. Being isolated is not the only cause of loneliness. People can feel lonely even if they are actively out in the community every day. It’s deep. It is not isolated to the poor, uneducated, or unmarried. It is very common in rich, highly educated individuals who may even have large families.

Loneliness is the result of the absence of deep relationships. It is the feeling of not having anyone to rely on when support is needed. It is the fear of dying alone and no one noticing.

Loneliness can be a curable condition. Try to identify it in others. Signs may be obvious or they may be subtle. It does not necessarily correlate with solitude. Some of the most rich and successful people we know have died from loneliness.

Reach out to those you know who are lonely. Even a few minutes a day of personal touch, a hug, kind words, or a phone call can make a big difference. The loneliness syndrome is growing rapidly in our time, even as we have the capability to interact with many more people every day through modern technology at the touch of a button.

“From the boardroom to the bedroom, we're connected 24/7, yet loneliness is at an all-time high. More people are reaching for mobile devices than for the hand of someone in need. Where did our humanity go?” Elizabeth Kapu'uwailani Lindsey

“Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.” Leo Buscaglia
