BALTIMORE, MD - Visiting St. John Fisher ate more than 14 minutes off the clock in the first quarter and never let host Johns Hopkins get comfortable as the Cardinals topped the Blue Jays, 23-12, in the first round of the NCAA Division III Football Playoffs at Homewood Field Saturday afternoon. The win propels Fisher (9-2) into the second round and a trip to Delaware Valley, a 62-10 winner over Norwich on Saturday. Johns Hopkins ends the season at 10-1 and had its school-record 15-game wining streak snapped.

2012 Johns Hopkins Lacrosse Season Preview

One year after working through the 2011 season with arguably the youngest team of his tenure at Johns Hopkins, Blue Jay head coach Dave Pietramala counts nine returning starters and a host of other players who gained valuable experience last season on his roster for 2012.

While the core of the team still boasts at least two years of remaining eligibility, the Blue Jays aren't going to sneak up on anyone this season, not after posting a 13-3 record a year ago and landing four different top four preseason rankings this year.

Still, there are holes - some large - to fill...

Second-ranked Johns Hopkins (6-0) welcomes sixth-ranked Syracuse (3-1) to Homewood Field for the 50th all-time meeting between the two most storied programs in college lacrosse history.

• Last Time Out: Johns Hopkins improved to 6-0 with a 12-5 victory over UMBC in the Konica Minolta Face-Off Classic last Saturday. Syracuse (3-1) won its Big East opener, 9-8, at St. John's last Saturday Series History: Johns Hopkins and Syracuse are meeting for the 50th time in a series that dates to a 4-4 tie in 1921. The Blue Jays lead the all-time series, 26-22-1, although Syracuse has won five straight against JHU, including last season's 5-4 double-overtime victory at the Carrier Dome.

He now sports an all-time record of 155-58 (.728), including a 132-41 (.763) record at Johns Hopkins. He ranks second all-time in school history in career coaching victories as only Hall of Fame coach Bob Scott (158 wins from 1955-74) has more victories than Pietramala while patrolling the sidelines at Homewood.
  
  
• About the 6-0 Start: Johns Hopkins is 6-0 for the first time since 2005 and just the second time under head coach Dave Pietramala (2004). Prior to opening at 6-0 in 2005, JHU hadn't opened a season with six straight wins since 1995. Since 1977 the Blue Jays have opened a season with six straight wins eight times (including this season). JHU has won the national championship four times in those seven years, made two other trips to the title game and advanced to the NCAA semifinals the other year...

This is the last day of 2012 that Loyola will remain undefeated.


They're highly overrated and— with their comparatively weak schedule— it is nigh impossible to understand how the poll's could possilbly rate them as #1.



D-1 is a mess this year. There is no clearly dominant team. It's possible that the massive increase in participation in lacrosse and the subsequent parity of talent across many regions has forever ended the day that one team could reign supreme.

No. 1 Loyola Comes Back But Falls to No. 10 Hopkins in OT
Loyola University Maryland midfielder Josh Hawkins got his stick on a Johns Hopkins University shot by John Ranagan with less than sixseconds to go, sending the shot well right.

The ball, however, went directly to Zach Palmer who picked it up, sent a pass to Rob Guida in front of the crease, and Guida one-timed a shot into the net, giving the 10th-ranked Blue Jays (10-3) a 10-9 victory with 2.3 ticks left in overtime...

Loyola should never have been ranked #1. That was a joke in the first place. You'd think the coaches would know better. They were no more #1 than Massachusetts is, who is now ranked #1 by virtue of being undefeated. That's dumb; Massachusetts hasn't played anybody.


Pietramala made the classic mistake of going to a "play not to lose" strategy way, way, way too soon and Hopkins damn near paid for the mistake. You can't do that 5 minutes into the 2nd quarter with a 6-1 lead; it will inevitably come back to bite you.

D-1 is a mess and the tournament will be a dogfight. I'm glad my livelihood and sustenance is not dependent on my ability to accurately rank these teams.

Series History: Johns Hopkins and Maryland are meeting for the 109th time in a series that dates to a 10-0 Johns Hopkins win in 1895. The Blue Jays lead the all-time series, 68-39-1, but Maryland picked up a 9-6 win at Homewood Field earlier this season (April 14).

JHU-Maryland in the NCAA Tournament: It's been 14 years since Johns Hopkins and Maryland last met in the NCAA Tournament. The Terps took that meeting, 11-10, in overtime at Byrd Stadium. Here are a few notes of interest about the JHU-Maryland series in the NCAAs: • Johns Hopkins and Maryland have met 12 times previously in the NCAAs with the Blue Jays holding a 9-3 advantage in those 12 games. • Maryland has won two of the last three meetings (1998, 1995). • The lower seeded team has won the last four NCAA Tournament meetings (JHU in 1987 and 1996/Maryland in 1995 and 1998). Prior to that the higher seeded team had won five straight. • Johns Hopkins ended Maryland's season with a loss in the NCAAs five times in a six-year span from 1977-82. • The teams met three times for the national championship in the 1970s with JHU winning in 1974 and 1979 and Maryland taking the crown in 1973.
