British blamed for Basra badgers

British forces have denied rumours that they released a plague of ferocious badgers into the Iraqi city of Basra.
Word spread among the populace that UK troops had introduced strange man-eating, bear-like beasts into the area to sow panic.

But several of the creatures, caught and killed by local farmers, have been identified by experts as honey badgers.

The rumours spread because the animals had appeared near the British base at Basra airport.

UK military spokesman Major Mike Shearer said: "We can categorically state that we have not released man-eating badgers into the area.

"We have been told these are indigenous nocturnal carnivores that don't attack humans unless cornered."

The director of Basra's veterinary hospital, Mushtaq Abdul-Mahdi, has inspected several of the animals' corpses.

He told the AFP news agency: "These appeared before the fall of the regime in 1986. They are known locally as Al-Girta.

"Talk that this animal was brought by the British forces is incorrect and unscientific."

Dr Ghazi Yaqub Azzam, deputy dean of Basra's veterinary college, speculated that the badgers were being driven towards the city because of flooding in marshland north of Basra.

But the assurances did little to convince some members of the public.

One housewife, Suad Hassan, 30, claimed she had been attacked by one of the badgers as she slept.

"My husband hurried to shoot it but it was as swift as a deer," she said. "It is the size of a dog but his head is like a monkey," she told AFP.

Jesus.
Did you ever see the rumours that came after Fermilab reintroduced buffalo?

I did not, but I'm googling it now.

That story was about the last thing I ever thought I'd see while perusing the BBC news website.

I even went back to check the link to make sure I hadn't been sent to some kind of parody BBC website.

LOL, the beeb is pretty comprehensive. The sci tech section is wonderful.

As for Fermi, rotflmao.

We need some badgers here.

Somehow one did show up in the thumb. It must have been the Brits.

Thank you.

I usually just check out the Middle East and Europe news as the US websites don't always give me a clear enough picture of the days happenings.

I checked out Fermi. Facsinating place. I don't understand half of what they are talking about, but interetsing none the less.

Still haven't found anywhere about hwo they re-introduced Buffalo, though. They are working on a project to bring back "plains" in their form before human occupation.

They are currently looking for volunteers to help measure grass length

I had to tag it on delicious the story was so funny.

"My husband hurried to shoot it but it was as swift as a deer," she said. "It is the size of a dog but his head is like a monkey," she told AFP.

That line made my day. I sent it a friend and she couldn't believe it wasn't an Onion story.

Can't be arsed looking, but Fermilab decided that they had a couple of hundred of acres on top of the ring. Why not reintroduce Buffalo? The nutjobs read this as, and I quote, " buffalo are used as radiation sensors"
Retards.

The whole thing made me laugh, but that is a gem. :D

Yikes. I meant wolverines.

We have plenty of badgers.

Oh shit, next they'll be claiming our badgers are spreading bovine TB.
We're having enough trouble with other faiths over this already.
Shambo a sacred bullock has failed a routine TB test and so by law must be slaughtered. The monks and nuns have gone to court to try and prevent this.
But if he's so sacred why have they castrated him? Good way to show the Gods how much you care.
Good news . We're going to worship and revere you.
Bad news. We're going to cut your balls off.
