From this month's Harper's Index:

Number of current Bush Administration officials who were involved in the 1980s Iran-Contra scandal : 4

Number who were found guilty of criminal acts : 2

Percentage change since January in the number of words in the Army secretary's Web bio devoted to his Enron career : –85

Number of imprisoned Americans who have been freed by DNA evidence since 1989 : 104

Minimum number of them who had already confessed or otherwise incriminated themselves : 15

After we fry them they don't count towards statistics...

We don't fry people anyway.
We poison 'em.
It's more humane...

I wonder why they sterilize the needles they use for lethal injections?

I am not going to make a bad joke not going to make a bad joike not going to make a bad joke.

Lock them up forever. It's a hell of lot cheaper than killing them. But I was glad that Gore wasn't around to save Timmy's life.

Murder isn't humane! State sponsored or otherwise.

1 : the crime of unlawfully killing a person especially with malice aforethought

I respect your views on the death penalty but please do not try to portray our laws as anything more or less than what they are. It is our legal system that finds that some crimes can be so heinous that the perpetrator abrogates his right to exist in society.

I was not attacking anyones laws or legal system in particular.

I am against the death penalty whether it is under the American, Chinese, Indian or any other judicial system.

If we believe that it is wrong for a person to taken another's life then it is equally wrong for the state to do it.

Death penalty is fucked too much of the time. I am all for it, but we need some definite changes in implementation.

"If we believe that it is wrong for a person to taken another's life then it is equally wrong for the state to do it."

We, or at least a majority of our population and I, do not believe that the state taking a life is "unlawful killing". We all maintain standing armies whose sole function is to kill when necessary. That is not considered "murder" nor is the removal from society of one mad dog who has proven to be unworthy of life.

If the person put to death is later discovered to be innocent, do you still think the state's actions were lawful or just?

Do you REALLY trust Big Government to make life & death decisions?

I sure don't.

Yes, they were lawful. No they obviously were unjust. A horrible mistake took place and I would like to know why! I would like to see tighter controls placed on the use of trhe death penalty but people like Ted Bundy, John Gacey and many others should face the ultimate penalty.

I trust government of, by and for the people. I think our justice system is the finest in the world, not the greatest, but equal to and unsurpassed by any others. Our system of law making and execution is unequaled. It does however require the constant attention and participation of the governers, you and I.

Me either. That's why we have juries.

Death penalty is a hard one for me. I like to think of myself as a non-violent pacifist sort yet the inhumane acts perpetrated by some evoke strong feelings - some people are just too far gone, too dangerous to those around them.

I do believe in euthanasia for extreme cases of dehibilitation and pain. Somehow it's easy to fit the extreme antisocial criminal into this group. Perhaps a cop out to make me feel better if there's a little relief when someone like Bundy gets it.

But the system is expensive and the potential for misjustice high. Imo, a wrongful death is not worth the deaths of the most evil of sorts.

Perhaps if we could paralyze them or turn them into harmless zombies. Reversable in case we find out we're wrong.

Oh, to have a perfect world
