In work today the crew decided to surprise me even though they know I don't really like surprises. Evidently they had gotten together with the boss. I had absolutely no idea about what was going to happen.

I first noticed that something was wrong when R.N.'s and Aides who were off duty started showing up on the floor right around lunch time. I shrugged it off because today was the dfay the boss was doing the yearly evals. on the staff. Besides this I was busy, I was doing the Noon Vital Signs. At 1330 I turned in my Temperature Sheet and had passed along the Vital Signs to my R.N.'s when the boss came over and escorted me to the break room.

When I walked in I was surprised by the group there. Everyone was in there, every Aide and R.N. from the floor. (We had several staffers from other units covering the floor.)

The Boss turned around and with me standing beside her informed everyone there that there was only one person on the unit who hadn't received their Eval. She then informed them that I had received a possible fifty out of fifty on my Eval. and was now being given the highest ranking of Aide in the Hospital.

She went on to tell them that I have on my own time crosstrained as a Unit Clerk, E.K.G. Tech. and Phlebotomist. I have received specialized training for working with both Radiation and Chemotherapy agents. I hold a state license for Security Agent, (Yes you have to be licensed for that in Florida.) and I have received refresher training for my FireFighter Class One and E.M.T. She then stated that I am the only Aide in the hospital to have shown knowledge and ability in both maintaining a Sterile Field and in Urinary Catheterisation.

Because of all of this I was now ranked as what is called a P.C.T. or Patient Care Technician. (One of three in the hospital. One of the others is my wife.) This means I am now in charge of training the new Aides on the unit as well as working with both Security and the Emergency Management Teams for maintaining the safety preparedness on my unit. In other words I was now officialy the go to guy on the unit. (This doesn't mean a raise though, just more work being dumped on my shoulders. Sucks to be me huh?)

Then came the second surprise. They had set up two George Foreman Grills on the table and had stocked a large amount of ground lean Hamburger as well as Bacon and several spices. Off to the side were several bags of fairly small hard rolls. I was being asked to do an Iron Chef for lunch. I looked at what they had there and grinned then agreed as long as someone watched over my patients while I was otherwise occupied. They readily agreed and I got to work.

Onions were minced as the bacon cooked. Garlic was minced and grilled slightly as the bacon was crumbled and the rolls were split. Butter and a bit of the garlic was spread on the rolls just before the rolls were added to the second grill to toast.

The Bacon, Onion, Garlic and a little bit of dried ground Little Birds and some grated cheese were mixed with the ground beef before it was formed into small thin patties. I started grilling the patties as the rolls toasted a bit more.

People were cycling through as the patties were shifted to the rolls and served. (They grabbed several and carried them over to give them to my wife, of they know me so well.) Every one of the people there came back and asked for more. Not a single person complained about the mini burgers I was serving. (Yes I did get some myself.)

Oh it was an interesting day.

We knew you were cool. It's very nice to see that they appreciate you at work, too. Congrats!

Even though there's no more money involved, it's still nice to know people recognize and appreciate your efforts.
