Recently a couple of "self confessed vegan seventh day adventists" were charged here in New Zealand with manslaughter for neglecting the health of their baby so far that He died. They were sentenced today to 5 years jail each, (should have been life for murder-IMHO). They neglected his health so badly, the child had severe open sores on his bottom from nappy rash. The coroners report states the child died from several vitamin B12 deficiency. In court, the couple stated that if it were to happen again, they would do it all the same. They would rely on "the lord and herbal cures" to heal their baby.

THE UPSHOT IS..IT WAS ANNOUCED IN COURT TODAY AT THE SENTENCE HEARING....SHE IS 23 WEEKS PREGNANT.

This couple both need to be sterilised..(MY OPINION ONLY) so they cant breed again...EVER. They are not capable parents and need the right to have children revoked from them.

Give me your thoughts on the matter. I'm searching now for a full news coverage of the case, and I'll post it as soon as I find it.

I sure as hell hope they take the new baby from them when it's born. It makes me sick to think people like that are having babies and people who are so desperate and deserve to have the children they can't are denied them. What's this world coming to?

I just saw an update on this story on the news not 5 minutes ago.

Directly following that story was a report on the latest sex/church scandal with a particular Melbourne church 'apologising' to a number of mentally disabled men who were sexually abused in the 1960's.

Sometimes it's really difficult to see the merits of organised religion.

Well, in all likelihood, she and the baby will recieve the best of medical care.

My guess i that her lawyer will convince her to take parenting classes so that he may argue that she is "rehabilitated."

The baby should be taken at birth and adopted by a loving couple who cannot have children, but who will care for and love that child unconditionally and well.

It could get ugly.

There are similar things happening here in New England too. The parents who let their baby starve to death because another member of their church told them " God " spoke to her and said the baby should have only mothers milk and something else ( I forgot what the other thing was right now ). This happened in Attleboro, MA recently and they are just now going to trial over it. The child was about a year old when it happened.

Those folks have no excuse. Looking at the pic you'd think they have some semblance of intelligence, although pics can be decieving.

An intelligent vegan will not suffer from B12 deficiency...that can be as easy as a little yeast or bee pollen in the diet...for the kiwi's I believe a bit of marmite or vegemite would do.

Many illnesses can be treated with herbs and homeopathy and children are particularly responsive to these. Many times a visit to an ER can be avoided with natural remedies and prayer but....

This child was badly neglected to suffer such a demise. Their lifestyle and religion as an excuse is lame. They could have done much better and still stuck with their convictions.

And if then, their child still suffered.....what parent worthy of being a parent does not grab at any last straws to keep their child free from death and suffering when other methods have so obviously failed. That's the instinct that God and Mother Nature have given us.

No child should be left in their care again.

I hope they have the presence of mind to suffer a lifetime of guilt.

Although I don't think I could agree with forced sterilization I could see mandating Depo Provera shots in a case like this....and if they make her feel a little too much like PMS - too bad.

The article makes some interesting comments on the difference of treatment of two different couples with similar histories based on whether they belonged to a small "cult" vs. a more organized religion like Christian Science. It shouldn't make a difference....judgement should be based strictly on the parents actions or inaction, not on where they get their beliefs.
