Ryia had just come from visiting her father, His Majesty Ulric of Dragoncrest. It saddened her to see her father growing more frail as each day went by. Her mind reconciled with itself that it was as age wrought. More and more her father had left the running of Dragoncrest to her. Her mother had died following giving birth to Ryia, her first and last child. Ryia had seen 18 summers by now. She strode through the halls of the castle, one hand resting on the pommel of her sword as she went, frowning. Rumors abounded in the kingdom that there was an underground labyrinth to the north and said to house monsters. Monsters her father was said to have hunted and killed until they were extinct. Rumors could be ignored, except in this case. Apparently, a number of young females from nearby villages had turned up missing. The locals were demanding the kingdom investigate the matter.

The last thing Ryia wanted was to be made queen at such a young age, but such was her fate. She strode into the throne room and was met by her father’s advisors. All three of them. She held up a hand as she crossed to the throne since all three had started talking at once. They were wise enough to cease as Ryia held up her hand and sat down on the throne, looking from one to the other.

“Do not all speak at once. You give me a headache when you do,” she grumbled, adjusting her sword as she sat down.

“Now, Albian, what is the news?”

Her father’s chief advisor stepped forward and bowed.

“Princess, I have assembled several of our knights to investigate this cave. They are prepared to depart on your say so.”

“Unnecessary, Albian. I will be leading them.”

“But Princess, do you think that is wise? You are heir to the throne and if anything happened----”

He broke off as she glared at him.

“I am well aware of the risks involved, Albian. However, because my father, as king, is unable to see to the matter himself, it falls to me to do so. Advise the captain that we will leave at daybreak. We shall see how much truth is in these rumors. Now, what other pressing matters are there that need my attention?”

And so her day went. The Elven Princess Ryia, heir to the throne of Aumbria, turned her attention to other matters. It seemed never ending but like all things, she finally escaped the throne room to go have a bite to eat before exchanging her royal dress for her suit of armor and making her way out to the practice grounds. The clash of steel, as she drew closer, was like music to her ears. Finding someone to spar with was a whole other matter. The knights, though they knew of her prowess on the practice field, were reluctant to spar her. She was to be their Queen someday soon, having heard that the king’s health did not fare well. Still, she could count on one or two of her father’s older retainers to spar with her. Ryia was no fool. They did not use their full strength or cunning and that incensed her to no end. It simply made her come at them more furiously.

By the end of her day, she was soaking in front of a fire in her chambers and pondering this excursion she was about to undertake at first light. She had instructed her father’s advisors not to speak one word of this to her father. He was much too sick to have that worry hanging over his head.
