My first school was so overcrowded that classrooms were held in the auditorium and cafeteria. Support staff was housed in closets and nooks. The psychologist worked in the elevator and the speech teacher worked in the duct room. But still, in the article's school, there had to have been somewhere else to support the child.

Hey at least they have him a mat. Back in my youth I was drunk enough to sleep on the bare shitter floor more than once. Kids today are spoiled.

I don't see why they could not have made a quiet space for him. Most schools have gyms with smaller rooms off the main areas etc or cupboards/closets for storing stuff or small offices.


A lack of common sense to me. Even if they had partitioned a small area for him in the class so he had a semi private area it would have been better than the bathroom space.

I remember the Vettebigot used to harp on the same point: "undesirable" children (mentally challenged, physically handicapped, pregnant teens) should be removed from the eyesight of "normal" kids. They're "distracting" in an educational environment.

There's degrees of special needs. My nephew doing fine. I coped, unhappy but not traumatised. But extra training for teachers and adequate funding is needed.

Someone with autism, if they're capable of having a "normal" life, gainful employment, etc. isn't going to be best prepared by sticking them in an institution that isolates them from society.

The primary school my kids attended had a couple of specialist staff, a quiet/sensory room, and quite a high number of kids with SEND who were successfully integrated and educated there.

Again, it depends on the degree. I wouldn't have required any extra staff, but being allowed access to an empty classroom during break times would have been heaven, and teachers knowing not to draw attention to me or ask me to demonstrate, etc. would have avoided a lot of stress.
My nephew benefits from having a front, corner seat to help avoid distraction.

That kid didn't look like he needed constant 1:1, he looked like he got stressed about sensory overload.
