As a purely political narrative (convincing people who are not inclined to vote for you to vote you) focus groups and general surveys show that a measurable segment of voters identify the Democratic Party as being "unamerican" and "not patriotic".

This is a narrative that is pushed by the opposition, with some level of success, so it is a narrative that you have to get out there and sell. "The Democratic Party is Patriotic".

Whether they're going to pull it off is a whole other question, but it's a bit of counter-programming I've always thought had a good chance at being effective as a political stratagem. Rather than being perceived as the party that burns the flag, alter the narrative and drape your protests in American flags. So the nightly images are not "anarchists burning flags" but "crowds of patriotic American's being suppressed" - imagine ten thousand flag waving mothers protesting ICE.

That's all pure real-politic. And of course you have the problem that a significant portion of the progressive crowd (including the real anarchists) are not, by any definition of the word, patriotic. You just have to change the definition of what it means to be patriotic and utilize the symbols of patriotism.

Expect more of it from Biden/Harris. They're going to try to walk the line between alienating various interest groups to insure their own turn-out while at the same time not alienating middle America (especially the independent voters who can and do go either way).
