'Death' Card Found in Sniper Hunt

DAVID DISHNEAU Associated Press Writer

ROCKVILLE, Md. (AP) - A tarot card with the words, ``Dear policeman, I am God'' was found near a bullet casing outside the school where a 13-year-old boy was critically wounded, a person familiar with the investigation said Wednesday.

The shell casing was .223-caliber, the same caliber investigators believe was used to kill six people in the Washington area and wound another, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agent Michael Bouchard said Wednesday.

He would not discuss whether authorities had linked the casing to the shooting Monday at the school or to the other apparently random attacks.

Montgomery County Police Chief Charles Moose, who has been leading the investigation, wouldn't comment when asked about the tarot card Wednesday but he said he was angry that unapproved information was being leaked.

``I need to make sure I don't do anything to hinder our ability to bring this person or these people into custody,'' Moose said.

The taunting message left on a tarot card known as the Death card, first reported Tuesday night on WUSA-TV and then by The Washington Post, was confirmed by a source Wednesday to The Associated Press.

Police sources told the newspaper that the tarot card was found next to the spent shell casing in a wooded area about 150 yards from the school entrance in an area of matted grass, suggesting the gunman had lain in wait.

The motive for the seemingly random crimes still eluded police Wednesday, one week after the first of six slayings. Nearly 200 investigators were working their way through 1,600 leads culled from 8,000 tips.

``We need just a shred of evidence,'' Prince George's County Police Chief Gerald Wilson said.

Wednesday morning, police responding to a 911 call spent several hours searching woods behind another school in Prince George's County after a witness reported seeing a man with a long black bag. They called off the search after finding nothing in the woods, about 20 miles from where the boy was shot.

``We feel confident that nobody is in there,'' Prince George's County Police Cpl. Diane Richardson said.

A woman who was questioned in the area was expected to be released, Richardson said.

A Prince George's County school spokeswoman said students were being kept inside as county schools remained locked down.

Police believe the sniper has shot eight people. One death occurred on a Washington street, the others came within five miles of each other in Montgomery County, and a woman was wounded in Virginia.

Investigators say the sniper apparently picked victims at random and fired from a distance with a high-powered hunting or military-style rifle. All the victims were felled by a single bullet.

Even as they discarded one lead - a man was released after police questioned him about at least one rifle in his home - investigators wondered whether the sniper might have struck weeks earlier, on Sept. 14, when a liquor store employee in Montgomery County was wounded by an unknown assailant.

Bullet fragments recovered from the clerk who was wounded at a shopping center in Silver Spring have been examined, but the analysis has proved inconclusive.

``We are not linking it, we are not ruling it out,'' Bouchard said of the shooting in the Hillandale Shopping Center.

In Montgomery County, where five of the deaths occurred, Moose urged people to keep calling in tips. The reward swelled to more than $237,000.

``We feel like someone has information that will help us bring this situation to closure,'' Moose said.

The Sept. 14 shooting occurred outside the Hillandale Beer and Wine store. Owner Arnie Zelkovitz said police interviewed him about the incident, in which his 22-year-old employee was shot in the back.

Zelkovitz said he believes the man was another sniper victim: ``It just seems too coincidental.''

Gov. Parris Glendening took a confrontational tone, repeatedly calling the shooter ``a coward'' during a news conference.

The wounded 13-year-old boy, who police have not identified, was in critical but stable condition Wednesday. He was shot in the torso early Monday after his aunt dropped him off at Benjamin Tasker Middle School.

Ballistics tests found that the bullet that struck him was of the same caliber as those that killed some of the others and wounded a woman in Virginia. That woman was released from the hospital Tuesday.

Dorothy Prather, a teacher at Tasker, said she was impressed by how well students responded to the traumatic events. ``The only ones who seemed really concerned were the parents,'' she said.

At a nearby mall, employees at a Coldwell Banker real estate office noticed shoppers were edgy.

``They don't get out of their car without looking around, then they dash in the store,'' Polly Rogers said. ``You don't see people on their porch, or playing tennis. We're not used to this - we think Bowie is the safest place.''

I think its just scary to know that there is a sniper out there.

Makes me want to stay inside and never go out again.

Knowing the American public, this will just become another excuse to go witch hunting. Sorry, I'm more afraid of being told to convert to christ or die then just being shot and having it over with; less to stress over.

... Oh yeah, btw, I am quite, um, intoxicated at the moment, so if I don't make sense, that's why.

with a long range sniper rifle......anywhere within a mile away, he can shoot.......yu could never catch him.

Siren, a mile is 5,280 feet. Very few people can hit a human sized target beyond 500 yards, no matter how good a rifle they are using.

edit to say: I'm not trying to make light of the situation, it's very serious. I just don't want people to get too carried away about the capabilities of this killer.

for those....

....who don't know...

The death card is the 13th card of the major arcana in a tarot deck.

Usually a knight or some sort of robed figure, death is almost always depicted with a white rose, and usually some symbol of death (skull, or pain) but it usually also shows a good, bright part of life such as a sunrise or a lush forest with green plants and butterflies.

The death card signifies something other than most people expect. It's not a card of sadness or destruction. It's a sign of change, renewel, or re-birth. The life we have known is gone. Over. Lost. But there is still the rebirth. Life will continue, though our lives have changed or gone on a different path.

NOW, maybe the guy knew this. Maybe in some strange sick way, the use of the death card is just a symbol of our continued change from the life of ignorance adn youth we have lived into a life that is harsh, sad, and at time quite scary.

Most likely this worthless ass hole is an idiot who thought the card looked cool and must mean bad things so he used it.

Hope the police don't catch him.. that would be too good. Hope he's caught by a bunch of normal people who know how he shoudl be treated. This man should be dragged into the streets, his skin flayed off his body, and his dying blood covered body strung up onto the side of a building so all can see that those of evil will be punished.

And you're right.. it sucks to be a tarot reader right now (though I'm admittedly a rank amature...)

this is just awful.

It is awful what this snipper is doing, but my point is what the media is doing. The website that I got this article from had a picture of the Waite Death tarot trump with this caption underneith; "The Death card from a Tarot deck, apparently left behind at a Maryland crime scene by Washington's suburban sniper, has huge symbolic meaning for some cults."

This isn't good; it give the small minded folks just one more reason to be prejudice against occultist.

At first reading the thread opening line, I thought it maybe a "joke" thread, but reading what is posted as of this writing...

I won't make a joke...This is not a laughing matter, it is a sad day and as been sadder yet the past two weeks or so.

To think "someone" has nothing better to do nor no other purpose in life, but to harm others...

I send a heart felt tear out to the families.

Be strong and hope for justice...and a quick end to this nightmare.

Sure.

The sniper that shot the boy was about 100 - 150 feet away.

Naw, the fact that Occultists are idiots works well enough for most people.

And the fact that you're an asshole works for everybody else. :D

Have a nice day.

Actually Silverlily it was about 150 yds. What I heard anyway.

That's a very easy shot with a scope, a little less so without, but still not much of a challenge on a target the size of a 13 yr old.

The tarot thing sounds a lot like what some units used to do in Viet Nam..placing death cards with their unit insignia on the bodies of the enemy dead to let the survivors know who had killed their fellow soldiers.

Sounds like this nut might see himself as some kind of warrior like that.

great...just what we need..some more bad press for pagans. And it will get blamed on us eventually.

Babe, Pagans and Wiccan's don't always get all of the bad press; CM's get quiet a bit as well.

Since when was Thelema earth-based?

I doubt it. The press might try and stir the shit a little, but I haven't heard any main stream press or people saying the Pagans are out to get us. It will be just viewed as symbolism. The ones that will take it hard are the gun people.

Of course there will be those that think, "Why can those people be Christian like normal people."

bottom line...generally if you aren't a mainstream religion or use tarot cards you get lumped in with any other group that fits the criteria. I was a practicing pagan and my ex was a discordian and many people thought we did the same thing...that's my point.

By similar reasoning, it would be tough to be God right now, and be considered a chief suspect.

There is always going to be an Us and Them and the thems are Them because we don't know them very well.
