Barbara Bush: Things Working Out "Very Well" for Poor Evacuees from New Orleans

By E&P Staff

Published: September 05, 2005 7:25 PM ET updated 8:00 PM

NEW YORK Accompanying her husband, former President George H.W.Bush, on a tour of hurricane relief centers in Houston, Barbara Bush said today, referring to the poor who had lost everything back home and evacuated, "This is working very well for them."

The former First Lady's remarks were aired this evening on National Public Radio's "Marketplace" program.

She was part of a group in Houston today at the Astrodome that included her husband and former President Bill Clinton, who were chosen by her son, the current president, to head fundraising efforts for the recovery. Sen. Hilary Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama were also present.

In a segment at the top of the show on the surge of evacuees to the Texas city, Barbara Bush said: "Almost everyone I’ve talked to says we're going to move to Houston."

Then she added: "What I’m hearing is they all want to stay in Texas. Everyone is so overwhelmed by the hospitality.

"And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this--this (she chuckles slightly) is working very well for them."

Speechless, dude.

Lovely to live in a classless egalitarian society, innit?

Why don't you support our troops?

(Welcome back, by the way.)

Hmmmmm, and people wonder where her kids get it?

It doesn't surprise me though, nothing a pol. says surprises me anymore.

I just saw George Sr. and Barbara on Larry King.

He had the nerve to ask them whether they thought GWB was doing a good job.

Guess what they said? (Hint: It wasn't 'No')

Wasn't it George Sr. who had no idea what a loaf of bread cost when he made a campaign stop at a supermarket?

Ouch! That one is going to leave a mark!

These are pretty base quotes, even for Barbara Bush. I thought that they must have at least been taken out of context and would surely sound differently when heard in total -- if they were even true at all.

Well, I chased the broadcast down on NPR's "Marketplace" evening edition and listened to them for myself.

The quotes are accurate.

Bill Clinton tried to cover for her but it was useless.

Jesse Jackson was right: "Stay out of the Bush's."

Cantdog hates freedom and coddles terrorists. It's in his bio.

Wasn't it also Barbara Bush who replied to a question about casualties in Iraq with this gem: "I don't contaminate my beautiful mind by thinking about such things."

Dubya is said to be her favorite son. It figures that he'd share her sensitivity.

On the bright side, Bush I and Bill Clinton continue to bond in public. "The Bush-Clinton Hurricane Katrina Foundation" was announced yesterday, and Dubya's got to love that. I'll bet Barbara does, too.

:D

Bush I is the daddy that Bill never had. Bill is the son Bush I never had.

Larry King went too far. He owes them an apology for putting them on the spot like that.

Regarding Barbara's comment about the refugees in the arena. Now that I've thought about it more calmly, I don't think she meant to demean the underprivileged so much as to welcome the prospect of hiring new domestic help and replacing the lawn boy.

I just heard this on CNN, but I haven't had the chance to corroborate it.

Is it true that Halliburton won the bid to rebuild in New Orleans?

Halliburton Subsidiary Taps Contract For Repairs

An Arlington-based Halliburton Co. subsidiary that has been criticized for its reconstruction work in Iraq has begun tapping a $500 million Navy contract to do emergency repairs at Gulf Coast naval and Marine facilities damaged by Hurricane Katrina.

Shrugs. This is hardly a surprise.
