An opposing viewpoint to yours may seem stupid to you because your mind's made up already, but for someone who's mind is still open it offers another point to ponder.

A free exchange of ideas is beneficial to everyone. Taunts, insults, snap judgments and being rude are the stuff of playground squabbles and political ads.

Continued obstinacy in the face of a logical observation is a sign of a reduced intellect. I know damn well you're an intelligent person, Stella...you're allowing yourself to be controlled by ideology rather than logic...emotion rather than dispassionate observation...hysteria rather than contemplation...those are steps toward polarization and no one benefits.

Denying another the right to offer a dissenting opinion on a subject employs a technique you profess to abhor...suppression of free speech.

Having an honest, but opposing opinion on a subject is not 'being a dick' as you put it, sarahh. Being a professional and an educator, you of all people should know that. I'm an even-handed person by nature, capable of understanding both sides of an issue. I suppose that's why I think of myself as a Libertarian.

What raises my hackles is when people who have dissenting views are told to sit down and shut up, ridiculed and defamed...that just naturally triggers my contrary side and I decide to take the other tack for no other reason than to level the playing field. This isn't anyone's private sandbox...all opinions should be given equal weight...anyone who's ever indulged in a formal debate format knows this...it's basic logic.

No one ever learned anything who kept their mouth open and their mind shut.

1. It's simply not sexy. "God those Republican knickers are hot, let's bash some Obama supporters and gay men for foreplay, then I'm gonna fuck your ass in time to 'America the Beautiful'." Doesn't do it for me, sorry...

2. Religion and politics are topics that shouldn't be discussed in polite company. I happen to like most of the people here, especially Box who welcomed me so kindly when I first joined Lit. Unfortunately we're (Box and I) on opposing ends of the political scale. That shits me! I don't want to know everyone's politics. I don't want to come to a porn site that's divided by political lines. Right versus Left - who gives a shit? We're here for the smut.

3. There is NO WRONG or RIGHT! It's pointless circling around and around with the same tired crap. And if you guys hate Obama so much well, think of it this way, as we do, objectively, outside the US. He's done far more for the standing of the US in the eyes of the world than George Dubbya ever did. We now have hope that the US is not the biggest terrorist nation of them all.

The problem is that there is a hell of a lot of "dissenting point of view" that goes something like this: "Obama is a marxist, communist, facist, muslim nazi from Kenya who wants to destroy the American economy in order to declale martial Law and rule forever." Or a milder, more well masked variation thereof.

If I can't blankly dismiss that as the reactionary and baseless bullshit that it is, because I have to be "fair and open-minded to all perspectives" and "give all opinions equal weight", then you're asking for a hell of a lot of patience from people.

It's because people HAVE been trying to have fair and open discusson, but have been barraged by an endless diharrea of "He's doing too much! He's not doing enough! Nobama! Nobama! Nobama! Death Panels! ACOOOORN!" that they have given up.

I'll call out nonsens when i see it. If I don't find equal amounts of nonsens on both sides of the fence, then so be it.

I don't think we're all that far apart. I am a strong believer in personal liberty, such as same sex marriage, but I am an equally strong believer in personal responsibility. I believe in the principles of meritocracy - that excellence is deserving of reward, and that indolence and carelessness should not be encouraged in any way. At the same time, I believe in helping those who really need it for reasons not of their own making.
