Bra is an abrivation of brassiere -- roughly translated meaning arms.

Panties is a word with no singular form.(pant leg is incorrect-pants leg is.

Tough and knight come to English in different ways. Enough used to be spelled enow, but the pronunciation evolved over time to something like enowth and then to the current one. The spelling appears to have been determined in the period just before Shakespeare's time. Knight, on the other hand, has a more direct story. Its original spelling resembled the original, roughly knicht. The g arrived as part of a general normalizing of the spelling, again just before Will's time.

Of course, no one really wanted to know this did you?

Doesn't help me understand why pants is plural then :(

Next up: Why is the plural of spouse spouses, the plural of mouse mice, and the plural of house pronounced houzes?

I hi-jacked, so I'll put the thread back on track:

I have learned that if my wife asks me if she looks fat in a certain outfit there is no good answer.
