This is the purpose statement for the Web site as set forth at the top of the Home Page. (If I were being critical, I'd post that the word "quality" is a neutral word and really should have some sort of qualifying adjective in front of it--"high" maybe or "acceptable/standard.")

Nope, doesn't say anything about being required to have writing development as a goal or to endure graciously unsolicited, often half-baked critical comment on writing technique. So, those feeling compelled to give others unrequested writing advice really have no justification for waxing indignant for having their hand bit when they choose to do so.

The Web site does offer areas where writing development can be pursued. Repeat, can be pursued. (Which is different from being pursued when you haven't asked for help or brought your story to these help areas.)

In your normal long-winded and egotistical fashion, I see you have agreed with what I said. Amongst other objectives the site offers oportunity to develop one's skills and comments should never be critiques.

And my basic point is that if they haven't asked for it, why is it your business to give it to them? Just move on to the next story. There's no requirement to give any comment. You can even legitimately vote it low. What is it in your makeup and needs that determines they just have to be given your advice?

This isn't really a directed comment at the original posting, because that one notes that comment was solicited.

I don't follow. If PCs are turned on the writer is inviting response - both good and bad. I don't give negative public comment and don't send negative feedback - just my principle - but readers are perfectly entitled to say 'this was crap' as much as they say 'this was hot'. Even on the most neanderthal free story sites writers get crucified for bad spelling and grammar.
