I think that it's an evolutionary holdover from the days before life rising to the level of being short, nasty and brutish and a mate had to be very sturdy to be healthy and a candidate for childbearing; a little padding for the lean times which were the predominant reality. I think there's some hardwiring involved in that attraction and that the only reason we don't all succumb to it is the culture of security and economies of plenty that afford us to put the aesthetic before the practical.
