If I remember correctly from reading something somewhere (I used to read books on Bundy, Dahmer, etc...) there is huge overlap and even disagreement in the field whether there is a difference or not and what those differences are. Though one angle is psychopathy is more the hereditary while sociopathy is more environmental.

I figure it's more a matter of a continuum from organized to disorganized. On the one hand you got your corporate CEOs living large and fucking people over, your pilot and guys like him who fake being surgeons and whatnot, and your kind and gentle next door neighbor who kills kids and buries them under his house. Down the scale come your impulsive acting out folks who can't stay out of trouble. Then somewhere in the middle you got Van der Sloot who cracked under the pressure and lost his shit, going from organized to disorganized. And then throw in the crazies like Dahmer and Manson for an offshoot.

As you know the perfessers get together occasionally to revise the DSM; and things are in and out depending on the current politics. As I've posted a few times: Back in 1967 mothers caused schizophrenia and sugar caused hyperactivity; no one believes it these days.

What always works for me is defining the existential nature of symptoms, then its easy to diagnose the problem.

have you looked at it? it has NOTHING to do with psychopaths. the term psychopathology is used in the broadest sense of pathology with regard to the psyche. and pathology includes such things as defenses, etc. (i.e. not an illness like schizophrenia).

he deals with forgetting names; slips of the tongue etc. which come from *unconscious processes*, it's argued.
