Lilly couldn’t help the silly grin on her face as Shane went on and on about the food. It was nothing, really. She liked helping people and he seemed like a guy who just needed a few lucky breaks.
“Sainthood? I don’t know about that.” She said, laughing as she quietly ate her fill of the soup before her. “I think I’ve done too much sinning to exactly qualify.”
Through the meal she could feel his eyes upon her, taking in every feature as if he were trying to memorize everything about her. It was almost as if he had expected her to suddenly change into some kind of monster while he’d been asleep. She’d seen a lot of people suffering from all sorts of mental issues in the ER and they could say and see some pretty weird things. She had learned to never hold it against them.
When he was describing how he could help her with the building of a shed, she nodded her consent. “It was a pain in the ass to build that outhouse by myself so any help with that project is very welcome.” She said as he slowly devoured the muffin she’d made, letting out a burp and then laughing about it. “Well, I’m happy to see your table manners have remained intact.”
She ate the last bite on her plate when he stood up and offered her his hand. Taking it, she let him pull her to her feet and she turned to face him. Looking into his eyes, she felt an unfamiliar but welcome emotion rise in her throat. She was looking at someone who wanted her. He was someone that actually cared. That was worth something so much more than anything money could have bought her.
Then she felt his arm wrap around her and draw her against his warm chest. She sighed softly at the embrace, her cheek pressed against him as he held her. God, how much she’d miss the feel of someone simply holding her. He was all hard angles and muscle, a smell that was unique to Shane filling her senses. A murmured thank you had her closing her eyes, a slight smile on her face as he kissed her cheek and then let her go.
“Sleep tight.” She said as he retreated into the bedroom, knowing that it would take rest to let him fully heal. Still, the shack felt suddenly empty without him near, even though he was just in the other room.
She busied herself with clearing the dishes, cleaning them in a bucket and tossing the dirty water outside before she shut and barred the door. Taking Shane’s bag into the bedroom, she quietly placed it next to the bed where he could find it. Watching him sleep for a moment, she gently pulled the blankets further up over his shoulders, wondering when the last time he’d actually gotten a good night’s sleep had been.
Moving to a little chest in the room, she pulled out extra blankets and a pillow, tip toeing into the other room. Making a pallet on the floor, she stripped out of the clothes, she’d worn that day, carefully putting them away to be washed later. She pulled on a long sleeved t-shirt and a pair of shorts, stoking the fire to keep them both warm during the night.
Before settling down on her little bed, she moved the Mosin within her reach, propped against the wall with the safety on just in case. As safe as she felt in her little hide away, she still had those little fears that someone might come upon her and she wanted to be prepared. She turned down the oil lamps, conserving what little oil she had and slid beneath her blanket, sighing in contentment as she watched the fire burn in the little wood stove.
For the first time in a long while, Lilly fell fast asleep with a smile on her face.
