There are two copies going around of "The Red Tent" for Litsters to sign up for......

This was Cym's idea? I think. Some brilliant woman on the Menstrual Hut thread came up with this idea, and I love the idea myself, so am happy to start a thread about it, so those who haven't been over to the M. Hut can know about it.

Men who are wanting to read, in my opinion, can sign up too. This is unverified, but I don't care, I am not about to be sexist. :D

However Men, If you want a copy sent to you, you just have promise to sign your designated 'woman' name, along with your man name, on the inside cover.

Don't worry, they'll be extra girly for you.

I am not kidding.

Well, April Wine has the other copy, and she is sending it to????

I have Ruby's copy, and I have not a person to send it to. :(

In order to qualify, you should say on here that you want to get a copy, and then see who has one, who is in line, and where you fit in next, and then you can pm your adress to the person who has it before you.

Thanks Starfish, Pagancowgirl and Elizabeth if no one has PMed you yet let me know.

I guess I should give a summery of the book but I don't have tons of time.

I'll C&P what a discription of it from what I can find on it.

LittleDevilWithAHalo contacted me by pm just now about the book and what it is about. I havn't finished it yet, so I am not giving you my summery, but this is the jist.

Okay, so, I have the copy that Ruby sent, and I suppose that that we should see who April Wine is sending it to next is.... I think... Expressolover is next. Am I right?

Well, here it is so far....

Two copies (that I know of) to share with so far....

Summery...
• Dinah works in the red tent where women go for their menstrual cycles and childbirth.
• Examines women's life in Biblical times when Judaism was still a new religion in a pagan society.
• Based on Genesis' mention of Dinah raped by a man from a Canaanite territory.

Dinah, great-granddaughter of Abraham, who is briefly mentioned in the Bible, narrates her family's history and her life as a midwife, in Anita Diamant's best-selling "Red Tent."
Women in Dinah's family still honor the old Sumerian fertility gods, especially in connection with their rituals honoring menstruation and childbirth. These aspects of a woman's life are so important that Dinah gains a place for herself, in a male dominated society, as an especially talented midwife.

Curses and dream interpretation are taken seriously and, like her brother Joseph, Dinah gains some esteem for her ability to prophesy.

Because this is a Biblically based story, not everything reaches a comfortable conclusion.

I am sending the copy I have to LDWAH.
If you want to be next from her, pm her and then she will send it on.

Once the other ladies chime in, on the status of the other book, I think we'll have a clearer idea of who can come after April wine and Expressolover, so you'll know who to contact.

I wanted to add...

Write in the country to which you are living in, when you write in the cover.

This is because many of you are not just from the US.

:D

I would love to readit as well. Starfishy, if you could addme to your list please ^_^

My head cold has me fuzzy, but I think I asked in the other thread to be on the list. I don't know if anyone kept track, but if not, I'd love to be on this list anyway, please. :)

Going back under the covers, now..

The Red Tent

I will be happy to pass it on to whoever would like to read it next.
I haven't received it yet, but I'll let you know as soon as possible when I get it.

Let's keep this thread bumped up so we can continue to pass it along, or come into the Menstrual Hut.

Thank you so much Starfish...you've given us this opportunity to share.

Color me foolish but would it not be wiser to pass the book around based on geography? To cut down on mailing expenses and delays.

Sending it to Scotland and then back to North America seems wasteful. I'd suggest generating alist and then passing it along shorter distances as possible.

It means the book spends more time in someones hands and also reduces the individual shipping charges.

Just a suggestion for an interesting idea.

I *loved* this book; it made me proud to be a woman.

It made me proud to be a woman, and even prouder of how tenderly incredible is my matriarchal lineage, as traced forward from the time of strong and wise women such as those so lyrically portrayed in The Red Tent.

Hey guys, april-wine is halfway through the copy i started on its way. It's going to espressolover next.

As far as i know, you are responsible for getting in line, for stepping up to the plate to whomever has one of the copies and saying, "Me next! I want it next!" and then remaining on top of things so that you actually do get it next.

There is no central list and there is no appointed list tender unless Fishy wants to take on that sucky job.

If you want it, YOU gotta make sure you get it. Announce your intention to be the next reader, either here and/or in the Hut thread, and then PM whomever is next with your street addy and name. Stay on top of it. I can't imagine anyone is going to take you by the hand and guide you along in the line until you're on top and then gently tell you what to do next. Heck, i wouldn't even trust you could get the book to whomever was next if you needed such handholding!

Here's what i wish:
1. Make sure you read it in an appropriately brisk manner.

2. Make sure you write your names, real and Lit, inside the cover along with a a short little thing about what you got from the book. (At least, i'd really love it if the people reading my book would do that - i don't know if Ruby has that as an expectation or not.)

3. That "country" thing of Fishy's is a *good* idea, too. (april, will you add "California, USA" next to my name?)

4. Make sure you send it on to the next person.
A padded envelope doesn't cost much, and the postage is pretty small for book rate stuff, too, but don't take reciept of one of the copiees if you can't afford to send it on.

Here's the amazon.com summary of the book:
The red tent is the place where women gathered during their cycles of birthing, menses, and even illness. Like the conversations and mysteries held within this feminine tent, this sweeping piece of fiction offers an insider's look at the daily life of a biblical sorority of mothers and wives and their one and only daughter, Dinah.

Told in the voice of Jacob's daughter Dinah (who only received a glimpse of recognition in the Book of Genesis), we are privy to the fascinating feminine characters who bled within the red tent. In a confiding and poetic voice, Dinah whispers stories of her four mothers, Rachel, Leah, Zilpah, and Bilhah--all wives to Jacob, and each one embodying unique feminine traits. As she reveals these sensual and emotionally charged stories we learn of birthing miracles, slaves, artisans, household gods, and sisterhood secrets. Eventually Dinah delves into her own saga of betrayals, grief, and a call to midwifery.

"Like any sisters who live together and share a husband, my mother and aunties spun a sticky web of loyalties and grudges," Anita Diamant writes in the voice of Dinah. "They traded secrets like bracelets, and these were handed down to me the only surviving girl. They told me things I was too young to hear. They held my face between their hands and made me swear to remember."

Remembering women's earthy stories and passionate history is indeed the theme of this magnificent book. In fact, it's been said that The Red Tent is what the Bible might have been had it been written by God's daughters, instead of her sons.

MM? We're creatures of emotion and smiles. Laughter, tears, and monthly flows are our coin. We don't care about what's logical and cost effective with this, though it was nice of you to offer such an eminently practical suggestion.

No shit, but LittleDevilWithAHalo is. My point was that sending it from Middle US to Scotland and then to say California is foolish compared to sending it by geography. At some point sling a copy across the pond to cover all teh Europeans interested(as well as the rest of the world).

Seems more efficient financially and time-wise.
