What is the theme of your story? I’m always trying to improve my writing, not superficially, but with more substance. Do you think or plan the theme for the stories that you write? The following are a few themes that I have tried and researched. I’m wondering how much do authors here put in their stories.

Assertiveness and Self-Advocacy
Self-Esteem
Sense of Safety
Respect and Caring
Independence
Reduced Isolation
Healing
Sense of Identity & Belonging
Physical Health
Quality of Life

Sexual Awakening/Liberation
Religious/Moral Epiphany (generally in a pagan, free love direction)
Honesty
Fairness
Karma
Strength of Will
Courage
Animal Instincts
Reason
Common Sense
Crisis
Drastic Transformation
Futuristic Scenarios (Utopias, Dystopias, etc.)
Ancient History
Experimentation
Libertarianism

A really good list. Do anyone else go this far when developing their stories?

Thanks, yours too. Hard to say. Guess we'll find out soon.

My theme would be Sense of Safety, because I've hide myself from everyone I knew.

I have come to think of Love as a sort of key to the understanding of the human. In the end, my stories and my discussions elsewhere relate, all, to Love. Love has so many facets that it's almost silly to say that; so many kinds and varieties!

What I want to evoke in my readers is an appreciation of how important it is to broaden love, to make one's heart bigger and more inclusive.

If I couldn't tackle this sort of theme, there would surely be little point in writing.

I've never made any huge statements in my stories, I seem to think in the microcosm, so to speak- the themes are personal to the protagonists;
Self Discovery
Empathy- sometimes a discovery of empathy
Sex Magic for transformation
Rootlessness, Dharma
And whether or not the story is a happy-ever-after ending, my characters never- EVER- feel guilty about their sexual activities. :)

I don't have a theme when I start writing. It develops through the story. I also don't know the title until I have my theme, which leads me to pick wildly irrelevant working titles on a whim.

The theme of my current novel has become breaking out of a cage, in this case, a self-made one. But like cantdog, my underlying theme's always love and the ways it can make you do things you never thought you could do.

I think it's a good message.
