One of my neighbours has a brass band practicing Xmas carols in their garage. They're pretty good!

What's giving you your Xmas spirit. The bottled sort counts!

the little norfolk pine with twinkling lights and handmade ornaments

Drove around the "Historical District" last night to look at the lights and yard displays.

Not as many displays this year with a lot of "dark" yards. Plus a lot of what was out there just wasn't that great. That's not to say it wasn't beautiful, just not as good/abundant as in past years.

I'll be xc skiing* with my grand daughter, today. That lifts my spirits all the time.

*skiing is involved but other than the constant "wait for me, grandpa", there's a lot of conversing going on. She's quite the talker.

i've been reading sexy santa books

it helps
:D

I've never come across a sexy santa book! And, suddenly, my life feels incomplete. Is it too much to ask that they're illustrated?

That sounds like a good way to spend a day, assuming you don't spend too much time on your arse. We're all missing out on family time over here, but I'll get to see my eldest on the day.
Have a glorious time!

It feels like things have gone the opposite way here. Everyone is making a bigger effort, I suppose to counteract the doom and gloom. The whole street sparkles.

Many of the homes in the "Historical District" have changed hands over the past few years. Some sold and moved away, some died and the homes were sold through court ordered estate sales. The new owners of those homes don't decorate like the "old guard" did and I'm thinking that the reason this year is so poor in the showing is that more homes have been bought by those who don't have the desire/money for massive Christmas light displays.

Out of curiosity, how old is the historical district?

The first homes in that area were probably built in the early 1900's after the city was founded. Many of them still have their original carriage houses (converted to garages of course) and the architecture is mostly Victorian/Craftsman with a few later additions of other building styles.

Vodka gimlets.
I googled, and now I'm thirsty.

My last house was 16th century, which people would describe as historic. We take 19th century houses for granted here, because they're so common. So different.

Oh that's really pretty. Maybe I should crack open some lights and sparkle :(
Does it help?

It really has this year!

I always used to hate Xmas, but it's grown on me the last few years, and this year I'm silly excited.

Pulling up, when I get home from work, and seeing all the lights outside the house, makes the dark evenings less gloomy.

Reminds me of that line in LA Story where Steve Martin is driving through the "historical" part of LA:

Some of these houses are over twenty years old!

In the spirit of 2020, I didn't really fully take Christmas down from 2019. I put my little tree, the tree skirt and the stockings away but I kept up my lights - both indoors and out, my fancy lady ornaments and my fancy Christmas ornaments.

Now my tree, the skirt and stockings are back up. I even put up Grandma's insane handmade beaded ornaments and Mom sent me some of the family heirloom ones - they're up now too. I've got the 25 Days of Christmas calendar that Dad made hung on the wall. I even made a little display on the bookshelf. Christmas has been more than adequately sprinkled around the house.

I'm looking forward to a nice fish dinner again on the day and will be doing hors d'oeuvres for Christmas Eve.

I feel insanely lucky to feel this festive. Especially when there are so many who are not.

That sounds lovely. Especially the family heirloom decorations. The ghost of Xmas past, but in a good way.

We hung new remote controlled lighted greenery orbs on the front patio. Turning them on: piece of cake. Turning them off requires patience, as the remotes interfere and as one goes off two or more come back on, lots of button pushing and swear words gets them all to finally capitulate.

Christmas trees in almost every room, and stockings hung by the chimney with care. (Most of the gifts fit in the stockings.)

Christmas spirits augmented yesterday with Messrs. Lagavulin, Highland Park, and Clynelish as I continue my tour of Scotch distilleries during the holidays.
