i "learned" something today on the internet... apparently "white hoes aren't happy unless they're stuffed with four black cocks." this was a complete surprise to me. but, like so many things, it got me thinking...

there's so much pointless and misleading shit on the 'net that if you actually believed any of it (the above example being clearly just for shock value and not evey TRYING to be a statement of fact) you might change your perception of the world around you.

so i'm curious... what have you seen/read on the www that SEEMED true & plausible but would up being a crock o' shit? was there any fallout from it?

one thing that pops into my head is that i just saw (in two stores in the same town) a printed email about an "amber alert" for a little red headed girl. i got that email when i got my first email account about 10 years ago... before amber alerts even existed. i would guess that the girl in the photo (who looks to be about 12) is likely 25 or so by now.

i'm not necessarily thinking of "snopes" type items but actual news and information items that really would up screwing something or someone over.

lol... well, we could change it. :)

i was just thinking... we formulate opinions about everything based on what we see and hear. so, to more clearly state the question, what erroneous things on the 'net have caused you or someone you know to misjudge or misinterpret life?

Actually, it's five, but who's counting? :D

I can't really think of anything specific at the moment, but I've seen enough crap out there that it's easy to take things, including posts on Lit, with a grain of salt.

while i was making my 4pm oatmeal i had a thought about this.

i would suspect that the internet is probably responsible for a good amount of the fear we harbor and suspiscions we have about sexual predators. i don't believe the problem is minute by any means... but i think that the sites that track registered offenders and things like myspace (and the news stories about it) kind of amp up our fears to a higher level than they would usually be otherwise. i think we've become more protective and more scared because of it.

yeah. i think i saw that on tv. sick fuckers.

i'm really amazed that the justice system hasn't been adapted to better protect against sex offenders. many convicted sex offenders have suggested that there's nothing that can be done to stop their actions. they have a compulsion to do what they do just the way a person with a cold can't stop a runny nose.

one thing that's going on in MD right now involves our state comptroller. the guy's 84 years old. the other day one of the mayor's staff members brought him a cup of tea at a meeting. when she left, he told her to come back, then told her she could leave again so he "could watch." i realize it's not all that tactful or professional but in his day that was a way to pay a compliment. the press turned it into this huge deal and some women were crying sexual harassment.

the comptroller answered questions a day or two later and it was funny as shit. he even had to correct himself (which he did dramatically) when he referred to her as a "little girl." he said, "god forbid i should call her a little girl when i'm 84 and she's 26!"

i guess it's not really the issue of WHAT'S on the net as much as it's a matter of having limitless space to work with. there's no bottleneck for information. in the information age, nothing gets prioritized because there's always a home for it.

Did you all watch the Dateline program the other week when they did a sting for 3 days I believe in California? One time they had 3 seperate men arrive at the house at the same time. And a couple of the men after they were caught even admitted to having seen a prior Dateline show where they were doing the same sting operation.

The 3 day sting operations netted over 50 men being caught - including a home land security cop.

I didn't see the show, but my mom was watching it, and she told me all about it.

I wonder how many online 14 year olds are actually 14 year olds?

Several months ago, I read an article in the paper about a police department in the suburbs of Columbus and how they were trying to crack down on this type of stuff. Apparently the majority of men will end the conversation once they ask the a/s/l question and find out that the person is supposedly underage.
