I think the problem lies in part of what you wrote above. Most people don't WANT to know the truth. So when someone requests honesty - even if it's gonna hurt - people tend to just assume they don't really wanna know and set about tryin' to disentangle themselves another way . . . which is far more hurtful, IMO - cause the truth almost always comes out.
