The Wizard's Apprentice (OOC)

1. As long as you win the fight I'm down. Kick his ass!

2. For you're next three posts my opinion in the end comes down to this. You're putting WAY too much thought into areas that don't particularly need them. I for one don't want to have to dig through (no I didn't click the link. I'm just assuming a large number) how ever many words everytime I cast a spell. Granted my charachter is kinda different but still.

The just writing, chanting the spell, is good. At least for everyday spells. I like the idea of having a specific chant for an enormous spell. Or maybe for new comers/weaker wizards. Example: There is no chanting really for a fire ball, there's just fireball goddamnit! But summoning a demon requires a whole ritual where you put your right hand in and take your right hand out, put your right hand in. . .(I can see you getting annoyed and it makes me smile.) Point made?

I don't think making up words is a good idea UNLESS we are going to have it where magic is intensely personal and while you may associate fireball with fireball I might associate it with Ignite, and someone else with Hell. It's just the word, or talisman that is most associated with that spell to that person. Sounds overly complex to me.

I don't particularly like the idea of all magic being thought based. Reason being that if wizards (and you've already given us a breif demonstration in your first post of just how powerful you are) how the hell does someone disarm you? It becomes problematic at the least.

i do like your idea of the runes being etched in the mind. That way maybe we can drug you and wipe you.

3. Different typs of magic are neat but i didn't see anything here that I think was worth the energy you put in.

Are there different rules for each? Like perhaps alchemical rules still follow the basic physics of matter cannot be destroyed or created only changed? So if you want to make an elephant you need two thousand pounds of SOMETHING?

Do enchantments need to be powered by something, a crystal, a life, sunlight?

Aside from Necromancy=Bad I don't see WHY you defined them.

Oh :p.

As for me being so very powerful, my first post doesn't show that I am overpowered. I simply said I was a very powerful wizard. There are many very powerful wizards. If you are referring to all the magic he was doing in his morning routine, most of that was just raw Mana, basically, telekinesis. And it takes very little energy to do those things because everything he was moving was fairly light.

As for disarming me, there are many ways. For instance, he is particulary gifted in Wind spells, meaning he would use those more often. If his opponent has water as an element and is smart enough, he could think ahead and draw upon the moisture in the air around Vaan. Said moisture could be manifested into the cyclone of wind Vaan has around himself and used to basically water blast him. Or an earth wizard could do the same by sand blasting him. Or a fire wizard who also knows some wind magic could turn Vaan's cyclone into a fire tornado or create a thunderstorm within the cyclone or something.

But to avoid any arguments, let's say we each control our own bad guys. I don't want to pit two players against each other, because then I'd have to think up a stat system to make it fair.

As for the types of magic, the only reason I thought them up was to give myself some material for the segments of Vaan teaching Cassie. Unless we just avoid writing any narrative or dialogue pertaining to the actual teaching. I just thought if I was going to be writing dialogue of Vaan teaching magic to Cassie, I better make sure I am well versed in this world's magic as well, so that I can properly portray Vaan as a knowledgable teacher.

And yes, the laws of physics are always present. But if you summon an elephant, one vanishes from Africa and appears to you. For everything gained, something is lost, in that sense. Basically, the elephant is instantly broken down into raw energy, flies through time and space and rematerializes in front of you. This transition is instantaneous to the one being summoned. But you'd have to be very powerful indeed to move that much matter any signifcant distance (yes, energy is matter too. Really, all matter is energy at its core. Physical objects are made from molecules, molecules consist of atoms, which in turn consist of subatomic particles like protons and electrons).

As for transmutations and enchantments, they could probably be designed to get fuel from the electrons in the enchanted object to make the spell last longer. As for the actual casting, it could consist of basically giving the target object a subatomic makeover, thus changing its physical properties. As for magically enchanting something, you could use your Mana to sort of engrave spells into the subatomic particles and blah blah blah.

Gah. I am overthinking this. Let's just say all magic uses runes that are burned into the memory and said aloud with will and intent, but we won't specify exactly what they are saying. As for types of magic, we'll just avoid that entirely, and I'll figure something out for the teaching sessions. I'll edit my post accordingly.

Oh, and by thought based, I meant no external focus. Rather, you picture the effects of the spell in your mind exactly as you want it to happen. For instance, your thoughts "will" your Mana to create a spark and then fire, and then your thoughts shape the spell. Like, if you imagine a fireball, the flame becomes a sphere. Or you could imagine the fire as a wall of flames. Or if you are rather theatrical, you could basically create the shape of a dragon out of fire.

Let's say you are an artist. The empty canvas is the space in which the spell is cast. Your skills with Mana and mental control dictate how big the canvas can be, what style and quality art tools you have, the quality and quantity of paint, and the variety of colors for said paint. Basically, if someone who has poor Mana control paints a picture, it might look like a small, crude crayon drawing. But if a master artist does it, you get the Mona Lisa or something like that.

The point is, while having the Mana/supplies to paint the picture is key, it is nothing without the skills to use it properly, which come with experience.

Anyway, I got away from my true point. A great artist relies on skill, but the drive to use that skill comes from the mind. Their thoughts shape what they want to paint. Their thoughts turn into brain signals that tell the hand where to move the brush and what paints to use. Essentially, everything is thought-based, so why should magic be any different? Without our thoughts, we couldn't even perceive our own existence. We think therefore we are.

Sorry. I tend to ramble late at night.

just curious since my character will employ using eastern magic more often, should i just say whats written on it.

EX. has the kanji for fire, and wall= fire wall
has the word for Kekkai= barrier

1. I didn't say you were overpowered. Just really strong. It's a matter of degrees. Goku would be OP if he showed up in say Marvel or DC. I mean the bastard can accidentally blow up a planet. In Dragonball he's . . .well still OP but mostly cus it's his story not because he's radically better than everybody else. I was more pointing out that in your first post we are in a really high magic world. Magic isn't just for big things we use it for things as mundane as temprature for showers and having our beds spit us out angrily.

2. I followed most of your second post. My point about disarming and I think I wasn't clear, wasn't specifically for how do you win in combat. That ultimately comes down to bringing a bigger stick. What I meant is say Vaan (or any of us) commits a horrendous crime. How would they go about imprisioning us? If you don't need a spell book or wand or anything you can always cast your spells and it seems to me you'd just walk out the first time they stopped paying attention to you.

it's 5.30am here, so i'll write a response when I wake up in the afternoon (Bout 8 hours time, probably less.)

Hmmm. If Vaan turned evil and killed a bunch of people, let's say, there could be special units of wizard cops that are specially trained to deal with such things. And even if say Vaan would just need his thoughts to escape, you have to keep in mind there are many ways to deal with that too. They could give him drugs to shatter his concentration, or they could create a magical seal around him to prevent him from calling on Mana, kind of like how Neji jabs a person's chakra holes (or whatever they're called) shut.

The walls of the prison cell could be enchanted to deflect spells, or maybe magical inmates are forcibly marked with special tattoos that lock their powers, sealing them from their conscious mind. In the case of super powerful wizards, the prison cell could have many layers of protective barriers with various effects.

Now, of Goku was imprisoned, he could easily get out. Just Kamehamehe the fuckin wall and be on his way. But that's a different universe, as you said, lol.

Another idea is to have a special collar like in the Fable II Tattered Spire segment that drains your Mana if you attempt to use it.

Hell yeah someone must be messing with the weather. From 90 to rainy and stormy. In early March. In New York. LMAO.

Oooh! This could work to our advantage. Maybe the first baddie could be a weather wizard they have to fight or something.

BTW, Kris, this post is a little bit better than the last. Keep up the good work :). As for the rest of you, awesome posts. It truly is a joy to play with such gifted writers. We should like form our own writers group or something.

Man, I can't wait for my days off. I'm going up to Walmart to get a router so I can turn my stepmom's internet into a wireless network. That way I can get online at home too. I'm going to set it up while she's at work, and by the time she gets home and sees exactly what I have done, it'll be too late to stop me, hehe.

thanks jeff,

An idea for the weather wizard is you could have it where groups of wizards are taking the form of little children. They do this because the authorities would not think young kids would be able to use spells like this. They could be after an item that would increase their powers, or other possibilities, with all the rain the roads would be hard to navigate via a car, and they could direct lighting bolts at certain targets.

Do you need anymore players for this?

I could do a pet for someone or something...

Sorry I meant to apply on this account, lol I made a new one and then thought... oh I like my old one better lol... as silly as that is... I am interested in this if there are still females needed...

I suppose you could do a pet or whatever. Might want to see if Knight or Sean want a pet or their own apprentice or whatever :).

Oh quick question... When it comes to pets... I had been looking around and I thought... could someone have like a miniature dragon pet...

Cause here were the pics I was looking at...

The dragon would be like the size of a chameleon...

http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/ac171/ErithMae/DragononRock.jpg

and then the girl form would be fairly normal sized...

http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/ac171/ErithMae/289cab6a4e47ba377ba99f8d2fb70880.jpg

But if no one is interested in that I could easily do something more conventional....

Well I could write her as someone's pet or as just a wild little animal escaping into the shop from all the feet outside.

I like that idea.
Kinda like Medusa's second form in Soul Eater....
Cute and innocent looking, but DAMN is she screwed up.

LOL, aw Jeff I know, I just want to make sure she's playable... I like the idea I've got in my head, she might become someone's pet later but for now I kind of like the idea of a little stray dragon.

Human

Human-ish

Dragon form

Name: Wolfwood
Age: In her human form she looks about 22 or 23 but she has been around for nearly 80 years as a dragon.
Birthday: June 21st
Occupation: At the moment she doesn't work or have anywhere to stay. She really is a small dragon and some people think of her as not useful because of her size but in fact Wolfwood is quite gifted with Wind/Air based magic. Of course with her wings she has the ability to fly anyway and being a dragon she can breath fire.

She has three forms, her full human form puts her at about 5'6 and while she has her ability to use magic she cannot breathe fire in this state. This is the form she would use to go out and be inconspicuous, she finds this body uncomfortable however as she is not used to not having a tail to help with balance.

Her half dragon half human form is much more comfortable and more convenient for her, she has her tail for balance and the dragon feet she is used to walking on. She can breathe fire in this form. She has claws and is much more able to defend herself both physically and magically in this form.

Her full dragon for is what most would consider small, Wolfwood would explain that she is compact, travel size, if you will. The form is better for sneaking around due to the small size and is surprisingly well trained at defending itself. When Wolfwood is looking to avoid people in general she takes this form and finds a small place to hide, of course she is susceptible to extreme weather in this form.

As for why she is on her own, Wolfwood was enslaved by another wizard. He was not a good man by any stretch of the imagination. The dragon girl escaped and had to go into hiding, that was close to twenty years ago. She goes from place to place getting what she needs so she can continue to live but it's hard when you're so small and no one is looking out for you. Wolfwood puts up a tough front but she really requires some care.
