It was a stunningly scenic day within the sleepy suburb of Falborough, one of those perfect days where the tree-lined streets seemed to offer the only shade from the warm blanketing of the sun as it shone brightly in a clear blue sky marred only by the aimless drifting of a few white fluffy clouds. The air seemed to hold a sense of peace that only seems to come on a Sunday morning like this, where work is forgotten until the next day and all thoughts turn towards relaxing or getting as much out of the day as possible before having to go to sleep to face the drudgery that would come with the morning.
Within one of the larger, and more costlier, houses that lined a street that could have been any other in Falborough from the outside...with its twin garage, four bedrooms, large kitchen, extremely comfortable lounge, perfectly manicured gardens, and heated swimming pool (which had had the heating turned off due to the unexpected spring heatwave)...Jason Harvey stood smoothing over the green felt that he had laid on the sturdy, octagonal oak table, before placing the three packs of unopened cards on the table. Reaching for the wallet that he kept in his suit jacket that hung on the back of the chair he had claimed as his, he placed it on the table in front of him after checking through to make sure that he had taken enough bills out to cover how large the pot could go in this monthly game of poker that he shared with his friends and colleagues from work.
The stakes could get quite high in their games, sometimes higher than they had originally anticipated - but then, what was life without risk; especially when you already had everything you had ever wanted - and this time Jason wanted to make sure that he didn't have to lose his watch and iPad like he had last month. His wife hadn't been overly impressed with that, even though it had been the first time he had lost in a couple of games, and the last two times before that he had won enough for her to spend most of the winnings on a dream day of shopping...at least, it had been a dream for her, he had thought he wouldn't be able to walk again after, though he had enjoyed some of the things she had bought that day....
Shaking his head to clear the pleasant, but distracting thoughts, Jason tried to focus. Today he was determined to win, because that''s what he was; a winner. In business, especially in the realms in which he and his colleagues worked, you took risks and you won or lost everything with a single gamble, but he hadn't made it this far without being good at the risks he took. Of course, neither had his work mates...they were all, after all, executives, each with their own office next to the other, and they were all respected, more so because they had made their fortunes and names at such young ages. Moreover, they were all competitive men, even though they were all friends, and good friends at that, but they all liked to win when they put their minds to it, and while the game was a friendly card game that they had played for longer than he had been married - some good five years - it could still get very competitive; none of them liked to lose, even though they all had fun when they played.
Today there would only be four of them, however, as the fifth, Daniel, had called and said that he couldn't make it due to his having to fly out to close a deal somewhere else in the country. Still, with just the four of them they would have a good enough time - they always did.
With that thought Jason turned and looked at himself in the mirror, checking his short, styled, light brown hair before he ran a hand down his freshly shaven face and adjusted the blue shirt that he wore with the top two buttons left undone; something that said he meant business this week, but still casual enough to show that he wasn't going to be taking everything too seriously. He wasn't the kind of guy to be serious, he was actually quite laid back, but sometimes your appearance could make a difference to how someone else acted, and today, he intended to win.
Little did the husband of five years know just how that day would turn out later...
However, for now he simply made sure he was ready, and apparently just in time too, as he heard a car pull up on the driveway and knew before the doorbell rang that it would be Hardy and Nigel, as they were always the first two to arrive. Sure enough, when he opened the door his eyes fell on just those two and Jason couldn't help but grin. Today he was right on the ball.
Hardy was a tall, darkly-handsome, well-built black man, nothing over the top just the kind of guy who obviously kept himself fit and went to the gym often to keep himself looking a certain way. He had short, black caesar-style hair, and mahogany brown eyes. His small, amused smile was almost permanently in place, as if he was always hiding something that he knew and no one else did. That smile matched his cocky and cheeky attitude; the kind of attitude that said 'I always get what I want', and Jason knew that often enough, Hardy did.
Nigel on the other hand, was seemingly similar yet so different in so many ways. Shy, to Hardy's cockiness, shorter than Jason, and with blue eyes and dark hair that often flopped into a fringe, Nigel was an attractive guy, and possible the most successful of the four who would be there today, but he was also a little more geeky than the others. Perhaps it was just how he dressed, or perhaps in the fact that he was more quiet than the others, he was still very successful, and he still seemed to have his fair share of success, both with business and women. Jason put that down to the 'quiet cool'...some way of acting that women just seemed to find... irresistible.
"Hey guys, come on in" He said as he held the door for them, more from routine now than any need, for they went through the same thing every month, and so the two headed straight through into the 'gaming room' that Jason had set up, while Jason headed through to the kitchen to grab each of them a beer.
As he pushed the refrigerator door shut, wondering when Sean, the last of the four that would be here that day, would arrive, Jason suddenly heard another car pull up outside before the front door opened. The lack of the doorbell was enough to tell him that that car belonged to his wife, and so smiling warmly, he headed through to the hall to find her...
