Sliding the sheet of paper with the legal writing on it to the side, he sprinkled a little sand on the official notice of demerit so the ink would dry. Then he pulled out a second sheet and began writing on that as well;
"Official notice of contract termination"
He was half way through writing the page when he heard a soft, nay timid, knock at his office door. "Enter!" he cried out loud enough to be heard through the largely sound proofed, heavy wooden doors.
Mary, in her maid's outfit entered. David grimaced. He didn't expect her to walk through the house in nothing but her stockings, but it didn't mean that he enjoyed seeing her clothed. He gestured to the floor on the other side of the desk as him and simply commanded "Stand there," before returning to his writing.
She was help and she would either be disciplined or released from service, in either case she was not privileged enough to sit in his presence right now. He focused on making his pen strokes smooth and precise. It meant that Mary would stand there longer waiting, but so be it. He finished out the notice of termination and sprinkled sand on it.
Only then, not bothering to look up he read from the first page of her contract, "Staff primary role is as a wet nurse. As such if, for any reason..." he paused and repeated that point louder, "... for any reason, staff can no longer express milk, she will be found in breach of contract and will be dismissed..."
David looked up at Mary then, and he knew that she could see the two pages on his desk, one a demerit, one a termination contract. He said in a clear voice as he locked eyes with her, "Answer in a yes or no only, and speak not one other word. Yes or no, did you willingly draw away from me last night while I was suckling?"
He waited for her to answer and then read from the contract again, "Staff may have additional duties ... and may include...hygiene and care of physical and mental health of employer in any regard that he deems necessary."
He paused and continued reading, "Staff understands that this position requires absolute sensitivity, discretion, and obedience, failing these three tasks constitutes a breach of contract..."
David looked up at her, "I would say that what happened last night was disobedient, and, quite frankly somewhat insensitive on your part. Now, we've got three issues that would constitute a breach of contract on your part. So..."
He turned to the second page of the contract and read, "Staff will be provided with a bedroom... two uniforms...meals...bonuses..."
David looked up at her, "A very light, some would say almost sinfully simple set of duties and schedules, bonuses including a second pair of uniforms and alcoholic beverages, all your meals, a total of four uniforms so far, and a fully furnished bedroom. It seems that I've kept up my end of the contract. Wouldn't you agree?"
He snapped, "Yes or no only! When she seemed about to speak, knowing that yes would be the only answer in that case.
"So then, we are at a point where it seems that by law, I would be bound to dismiss you from your contract. Of course, the cost of your special uniforms will be paid back. I'll have my lawyer contact you about setting up payment for the various fees you have cost me. I'm sure that whatever task you decide suits you better will pay you well enough to make speedy and full recompense."
He paused, knowing that there was no way she'd be able to pay back the costs of her uniforms alone in a year of washing. Then he spoke, "But I feel that you have potential. You've shown the potential to be a bright and obedient woman. I have a dire need of a maid and while you could easily be replaced, I do not wish to go through the time of waiting for another, more suitable, servant to be found."
He paused letting that last comment twist. But it was true, her actions last night made her an unsuitable maid for his desires. "So I am willing to discuss with you the possibility of letting last night's disobedience go with only a demerit. If you still wish this relatively low duty, yet high paying, high prestige, and high benefit job that is."
He leaned forwards on the desk and clasp his hands together, "But if that is the case, I expect to hear a rather pressing plea from you for the demerit and not the termination paper.....right now."
