Melissa Avery backed her Ford fusion into a parallel park spot as she sang along with Pink’s “Don’t Let Me Get Me.” Turning off the car she stepped out into what was destined to be a wonderful spring day. She glanced up and down the street, eyeing the trendy boutiques which populated both sides of the street. She reached in and grabbed her iphone from its holder and after a moments thought grab a white cotton shrug.

Pulling on the garment she hid the two half sleeve floral pattern tattoos that adorned her shoulders and upper biceps. The sundress she had chosen had left her shoulders bare, and this was not the time to be displaying her love of body art. As she closed the door she checked her ponytail of jet black hair, tucking in a wisp of bang, into a clip as she brushed it back from her face. She wanted her appearance to be impeccable, as this was first time she was going to be with Mary, her fiancés’ mother, by herself. The reflection which stared back at her was tall, and curvaceous. The yellow sundress clung to her accentuating her body. The yellow pumps which adorned her feet gave her an additional two inches, putting her at six feet.

Melissa knew that the next few months of her life would be one of the biggest changes that would ever happen to her. Her romance with Bobby had been a whirlwind affair, and after he had proposed; and she had accepted, he had told her that he was heir to one of the biggest private industrial company’s sill in existence. He had always had money, but she contributed this to the fact that he was a junior lawyer in a prestigious firm, not a billionaire.

She had met his family only a week ago and the affair still dazzled her. The home they had invited her into was beyond luxurious, opulent to the extreme. Bobby had urged her to dress very conservatively, and she had complied, though secretly she was disturbed that he had had her disguise the side of her that she thought he found the most appealing.

After meeting Robert and Mary, Bobbies parents they had had drinks and dinner, before sitting down in a drawing room and just talking. Bobby’s parents had sat silently as she told them about her job, working as an ER nurse on the night shift. She had also told them about her childhood, growing up on a ranch in Wyoming. She had tried hard to read their expressions, but she left the house that evening with the subtle feeling that she was not as welcome as they had pretend.

She had also left with a business card of a wedding planner. Mary had handed her the small square card as she and Bobby had left the mansion, telling her. “I’ve already made and appointment dear. Can you be free on Tuesday morning at nine?” She had agreed, fearing to show anything but compromise with her new soon to be in-laws.

Now she stood on a street of boutiques, that eight months ago, she would never have dreamed of shopping in. Three spaces ahead, she saw the black luxury Mercedes sedan that had to be Mary’s. A tall man in a chauffeur’s uniform stood in front, wiping the hood with a chamois cloth. Matching the name on the business card with the shop directly behind the Mercedes, Melissa walked to the front of the glitzy store; mannequins in extremely expensive wedding dresses stood in storefronts on either side of the door. Pulling it open she stepped into a cool brightly light space. Expecting it to be gaudy like many other similar businesses, she was pleased to find that she had stepped into a gorgeous salon, with impeccable furniture. A diminutive and pretty oriental woman approached her carrying a clipboard and greeted her.

“Hello, I’m Diane Lee, how may I help you?”

Melissa smiled down at the woman and replied. “Hi Diane, I’m Melisa Avery, and I have an appointment with a wedding planner. I’m sorry I don’t know her name, but my fiancee's mother Mary should already be with her.”

Diane smiled back and indicated for Melissa to take a seat on one of the settee’s that were arranged around the salon. “Certainly Ms. Avery, I will let them know you have arrived.” As Melissa folded her tall body down onto the nearest leather settee the woman disappeared through a cleverly concealed door.

Eight o’clock on the dot, Riley James unlocked the front doors of her office, J’Adore The Day, just as she did every morning. Walking through the tastefully decorated front room, Riley did a quick check to make sure everything was in perfect order. The walls, painted a cheerful yellow and not the garish pink that so many other wedding planners used, were decorated with black and white photos of couples and weddings that Riley had planned in the past. Sofas and chairs – the comfy, fall-into-the cushions kind that the young woman loved so much – were set facing each other so as to promote conversation among those waiting to meet with Riley. Glass tables were decorated with bridal magazines, flowers, and candles. The whole thing was warm, inviting, and designed to keep brides-to-be (and especially their mothers and mothers-in-law) relaxed.

“What’s on the agenda today, Diane?” Riley asked her assistant, a petite woman whom Riley had met during the first wedding she’d planned. Diane had proved an invaluable assistant and Riley praised the day that she had met the beautiful Japanese woman.

Handing her a cup of steaming coffee – two creams, no sugar – Diane rattled off the list of brides coming in that day.

“And don’t be alarmed, but Mary Buckley is coming in at nine with her son’s fiancée.” Diane said, shuffling some items around on the iPad that was pretty much attached to her hand.

“Oh goody, the old battle ax herself.” Riley smirked. Mary Buckley was well known among wedding planners near and far. She had frequented many of the society weddings that Riley had planned, and her word was law amongst the upper-crust women. Many a bride and mother had worried that the day would not be perfect enough for Mary’s approval.

“So her son has finally managed to find a girl who can live up to that woman’s standards, huh.” Riley sipped her coffee as she walked into her main office. Sitting down behind the desk, she glanced at the list of e-mails waiting for her. “I never thought I’d see the day. Wonder what she’s like, probably a little china doll that Mary is going to steam roll right over.”

Diane shrugged as she set the files for another wedding on Riley’s desk. “We’ll know soon enough.” She replied.

Nine o’clock rolled around and Mary Buckley strode into Riley’s office without even waiting for Diane to let her in. Dressed to the hilt in a Chanel pantsuit with a pair of Prada heels and matching handbag (all of which probably cost more than Riley made in a year), Mary Buckley was a woman to be reckoned with.

Standing up, Riley did a quick mental check of her own appearance. Her black pencil skirt clung to each gentle curve of her hips, accentuated her tight ass – which she’d earned after long hours spent at the gym – and came to rest just above her knees. A cream, silk blouse was tucked into the skirt, the fabric loose and flowing, but not hiding the gentle swell of her breasts. Her long, mocha colored curls hung down around her shoulders. The black stilettos on her feet added another two inches to her height, making Riley stand just over 5’8”. She had left her apartment that morning feeling confident and put together, but one sweeping glance from Mary made Riley second guess her entire outfit.

“It’s a pleasure to see you again, Mrs. Buckley. Please, have a seat.” Riley said, extending a hand, her nails painted a fashionable nude color. Mary took her hand and gave it a quick shake, as if she couldn’t stand to touch “the help” for too long.

“My son’s fiancée is late.” Mary said by way of a hello. Riley glanced at her watch. The poor girl was only two minutes late. Just at that moment Diane knocked on the office door.

“Miss Avery is here.” She said.

“Excellent, show her in please.” Riley stayed standing, as she waited for the young bride to come in. The woman that walked through those doors was not the picture that Riley had imagined. The tall, curvaceous woman was stunning in a yellow sundress and white shrug. Riley couldn’t help looking the woman up and down appreciatively. In her line of work she had seen many stunning brides, but this woman was by far the most beautiful she had laid eyes on.

“Hi,” she said, moving to greet the woman, “I’m Riley James, I’ll be your wedding planner.”
