The Vet by torchthebitch

In "The Vet" I was taking the more or less traditional cheating wife/revenge theme and looking at how our protagonist deals with his over-reaction to his wifes cheating. I was also trying to make it a fairly compact read, so I didn't address a number of things, simply to keep it short.

Firstly, I originally called the main character Dominic. I then changed it to James so that I could make the name change to something that looked entirely different to the English name. Unfortunately, I missed one instance of the original name I apologise for any confusion caused.

I feel that perhaps I did not explain the name change as well as I might.

The relationship between Ireland and the rest of Britain is a very nuanced one. Whilst there is a lot of antipathy, there is also a pragmatic approach too. Britain has always been a major trading partner. However, English was imposed on the Irish and names were written as the sounded to the ear of the English scribes.

Many people have chosen to use the Gaelic form of their name. In the same way that Charles and Carlos are equivalents, Irish also has equivalents. I chose the James/Seamus and Clarke/óCléirigh pairings because the are so visually and aurally different that they make police inquiries difficult. The idea is not that new. Sean McStoifan, a well know Irish republican, was born in England as John Stevenson. Barbre de Brun, a Sinn Féin member of the Northern Ireland Assembly, is sometimes refered to as Barbara Brown.

The actual process for James/Seamus to change his name is not difficult. Since he had an Irish birth certificate he would be entitled to an Irish passport. In applying for the passport he can choose to use the Gaelic form. Since he is not actually changing his name in the same way as going from William Smith to John Black. It is more of an administrative measure. Embracing Gaelic culture is also regarded as a good thing. Once he had the passport in the Gaelic form of his name, he could use it as identification to apply for a driving licence, giving him all the identification he would need to lead a normal life.

Paradoxically the most difficult thing for him to obtain would be a bank account. I sidestepped this problem entirely by the simple expedient of ignoring it.

Sadly, I'm not sure many of your readers will see this thread. :rose:

You might want to include notes on your public author's page. Sometimes fans check there as some writers leave regular updates on theirs.

I love the title, by the way. ;)

Thanks for the idea. I put a note in the comments. Next time I post I'll put a note in a footer. Provided I remember that is.;)

I'm not really very practised at this. Nor am I particularly computer literate, but I'm learning:)
