Some bright spark in September 2023 thought it would be a smart idea to put off Congress consideration of the Farm Bill until September 2024. Either a new Bill projected to cost $1.5 Trillion over a decade or another extension will be required some 6 weeks before the election. The GOP dominated House Agricultural committee released its draft of the proposed bill a couple of days ago. Basically the draft increases subsidies to Farmers, particularly Big Ag Corporations, and cuts subsidies to poor individuals in both rural and urban America. Additional funding is to be obtained by removing climate related controls from the Inflation Reduction Act and placing the money in a "General Conservation fund" to be administered by the Dept of Agriculture
Normally every Congress crittur of whatever party would have their snouts in the trough to get whatever they can for their districts , but considering the polarization of Congress, is any reasonable outcome possible before November? The current proposal has zero chance in the Senate.
