I'd forgotten some of those. They're so ingrained in my speech now that I don't even realize that I'm using them....especially "he ain't got good sense." I say that alot.

I'm not sure if this is southern or not, but I do know that the only place I've ever heard it is in Georgia....

I've heard people use that up here. Usually "Got a beatin' with an ugly stick"

I've heard variations of that all over the place, often with "beaten" instead of "whipped." It's definitely a classic!

The general idea of the thread is a good one, but to really be useful in creating a character you would almost have to post the sense of the lines you want your character to say, and ask someone to 'translate' them into the appropriate dialect.

And of course, there are always going to be problems with individual variation -- I grew up in a 'mixed' family, with one small-town-southern (USA) parent, and one right-off-the-farm-midwestern (USA) parent, and picked up language from both of them. Class and education matters as well, at least as much here as in the UK. I know brothers who speak very differently in large part because one joined the army right out of high school and now drives a truck, and the other went to college and then to law school and now is a county judge. They still look alike, but they don't sound alike.

Expressions vary by race, too, of course. Even little things often change. I might ask someone I haven't seen in a couple years "Do you still live over on Elm Street?" but my black friends are more likely to ask "Do you still stay over on Elm Street?"

Anyway, if anyone wants advice on the St. Louis dialect, just ask.
