Reports of racially motivated, fatal shootings by police officers have garnered extensive public attention and sparked activism across the nation. New research from Michigan State University and University of Maryland reveals findings that flip many of these reports on their heads – white police officers are not more likely to shoot minority citizens than non-white officers.

“Until now, there’s never been a systematic, nationwide study to determine the characteristics of police involved in fatal officer-involved shootings,” said Joseph Cesario, co-author and professor of psychology at MSU. “There are so many examples of people saying that when black citizens are shot by police, it’s white officers shooting them. In fact, our findings show no support for the idea that white officers are biased in shooting black citizens.”

"We found that the race of the officer doesn’t matter when it comes to predicting whether black or white citizens are shot," Cesario said. "If anything, black officers are more likely to shoot black citizens, but this is because black officers are drawn from the same population that they police. So, the more black citizens there are in a community, the more black police officers there are.”

It's called Affirmative Action. Government employees are required to be in the same racial proportions as the people they serve.

Are you actually trying to say the EEOC does not require local governments to hire and promote employees in the same percentages as their populations? Are you saying that if X% of the population of a city consists of a given race, they are not required to have X% of their employees be of that race?

I'm sure areas would LIKE it if the government workers were good representatives of that area, but there is no law that exists that says they must. Firefighters are overwhelmingly male & white, so you're saying that most minority areas don't have firefighters because they can't find any minority firefighters?

This thread is about police, not other city or county employees. Depending on how Hispanics are listed, that 73% White sounds about in keeping with the general population. Most cops would be men because most women lack the physical attributes. They are not big or strong enough to overpower perps, nor fast enough to catch a fleeing suspect.

To what degree this parity results from affirmative action would be hard to say.
