So I think I mentioned I’ve been going through the discworld books and I really like the witches series (and I’m including Tiffany Aching as part of that). Super short version: while witches do use magic and have to deal with magical threats most of the time they wind up just using a bit psychology (or “headology”), practical advice and maybe a smidge of magic to take care of their town.

So it got me thinking about making a town where they have a witch for their problems and the stories would be about her having to deal with the town’s problems, only using magic when absolutely necessary.

For example:

1. Young woman comes to the witch and reports she feels she’s been ensorcelled by another woman.

“Oh you don’t understand. When I see her hair loosed from her bonnet it is as though I can focus on nothing else. When she speaks I am struck deaf and all I can focus on is her lips. At night all I can think of is the way her clothes cling to her so tightly.”

Obviously she’s smitten but the witch knows she can’t just come out and say it, especially if the other girl isn’t interested. So she comes up with a plan.

“Ah, I worry you might be right child. But I worry more this girl you lo-look at so intently may also be under the sway of a darker force. I shall invite her here at once. I want you to return here in your best dress and bring the finest food you can spare and I’ll have her do the same. Now listen closely: I shall cast a spell on the food. It will be your job to keep her in this house until the spell takes effect.”

She tells the other girl the same and after a night together the two of them are “cured” (they are no longer so smitten they can’t get through the day) but witch says the symptoms may return so they will need to share a house together so they can further fight off the magical malady.

2. “My nephew turns into a terrible beast at night! Ever since he was grown I hear moaning from hisroom and his sheets are sometimes stained with a most curious fluid.”

“goodie Sara…have you ever been with a man?”

“Oh yes, I was with my father until I was grown, but I don’t see what that has to do with my nephew! He goes out at all hours and sometimes I swear I have seen four if not six legs under his covers! We must call a hunter!”

“I think I might have a faster solution.”

Next morning witch comes by, her petticoats missing and her bonnet half done.

“Yes, I’m afraid your nephew may need some further treatments. I will employ him as my assistant. He can share my…I mean I have a spare bedroom for him and his friends”

“What?”

“I have a spare bed for him, he has a job, no need for anymore questions.”

There take that limit to only one reaction system!

I love the idea, and find the second one in particular hilarious. I think it'd make a good anthology even.

The town witch (sans torches and pitchforks) is a cool idea. She's a bit of a hedge wizard and specialzes in pottions and draughts, and any sorcery she might do she keeps on the down-low.

Maybe a young woman comes to her for a love potion and the witch knows the young man who is being targeted. She arranges it so that she gets a night with the young man and the young woman in trade.

A mother comes to her for a cure for the attraction she feels for her son/stepson, believing it to be immoral. The witch does so but does it by removing her concern about it.

A woman is pregnant with the wrong mans baby and knows it. She wants a spell or something to make sure the child favors her rather thna the father so her husband doesn't suspect.

A betrothed couple who are both virgins come to her for help. They want to stay pure until marriage but they don't want that awkward first sex on their wedidng night. They want that first night to be epic.
The wiitch grants the wish, but also alters the spell she can feel everything that happens herself as she watches through her scrying mirror.
