It's been said that you don't really need that. That you can omit that and not change the meaning of that. Do you overuse that?

"The other email address was a throwaway used for contacts that I'm not sure I want to continue."

"The other email address was a throwaway used for contacts I'm not sure I want to continue."

Makes no difference there does it?
 
I’ve been trying to drop it when I notice I type it out.

Even right now, I was going to include it. “I notice that I type it out.”

My editor always would substitute That whenever i used This - in phrases like
He decided to go in the Red car, that time. or That was the reason he punched him in the face.
In those instances I think That is a neccessary word.
 
So yes it is useful and sometimes it does change the meaning but yes it can be overused.
