The Sewing Circle

My copy never leaves the top of the DVD player - it's my comfort blanket.

Shall I share the goss about Jennifer and Colin Firth?!
Ok, I will!
Weeell. Apparently J & C had a passionate fling during the filming of the series because they were young, impetuous and full of hormones and starch. Then life moved on - fling done. But... guess who appeared in the cast of The Kings Speech in addition to C? She appears as the wife of Lionel Logue, the speech therapist. I'm sure they were very adult and charming when they met up again!

I knew all of that gossip, as I also love Colin too :D I love rehashing it though. They were wonderful together in the series. I first saw that version of P & P in high school and it hooked myself as well as a few other classmates. I went on to read the book and it is my favorite book ever ... I don't know how many times I've read it. It is also a comfort story for me too. Plus Mr. Darcy is delicious. Okay, enough of that. I could go on all day talking about it. :)

The Miseducation of Cameron Post ( reviewed )
TY Amazon, who I know are a behemoth that seeks to crush us under the weight of its bloated tentacles, but they delivered the DVD and I'm fresh ( maybe too fresh ) from watching it.
I like to sleep on things before I reach a final conclusion, so I might come back to ETA/edit this.

First impression
. It's a neat film aimed squarely at the film festivals so it's not too long and deals directly with the issue, which is sending your kid to happy-clappy gay conversion camp. I don't know too much about these centres other than that they're banned in most countries and, because I'm not familiar with American education systems, I didn't know quite what to expect.

The live-in group of teenagers are presented with insidious christianity by the staff: a converted gay man and his sister ( Jennifer Ehle ). I'd expected water-boarding and screaming praises of the lord, but it was more subtle. The end result is the same no matter how it's done: send a teen who is already confused about their sexuality to an unfamiliar place and lay the guilt on thick. Tell them the solution is within themselves, that Satan is everywhere, and have them admit to sins simply to keep the teachers happy.

The central character, Cameron, initially shows us bewilderment, then through friendships, scepticism until she finally finds a voice to judge. There are no hidden messages or plot twists, so I guess it is a witness story. The trailer includes the line "I'm tired of being disgusted with myself" and that can be taken two ways.

I get a little frustrated with film makers who include dialogue spoken so quickly and quietly you have to wind back to listen again, but that might just be my brain. The cinematography is good, the flashbacks a little opaque at first and the supporting music fits in well to the 1993 timeframe. I guess it helps too that Chloe has a mouth to die for: she is gorgeous.

I'll give it 7/10 and would watch it again on a rainy day. Take care y'all x:kiss:

With intense expressions of love and lust, Swastika (1964) directed by Yasuzo Masumura, hailed by director Shinji Aoyama (Eureka) as the most important filmmaker in the history of postwar Japanese cinema, follows Sonoko Kakiuchi (Kyoko Kishida) as she falls victim to a school gossip along with Mitsuko (Ayako Wakao), an industrialist’s daughter, and soon they form a friendship that becomes a crazy sexual obsession, making Sonoko wild with envy and desire. Sonoko has a questioning husband in the form of Kotaro (Eiji Funakoshi) while Mitsuko has a clingy fiancé named Watanuki (Yusuke Kawazu). Sexual acts are mostly implied with body doubles used for intimate scenes, with emphasis placed more on the mental manipulations and mind games of the four central characters wrapped up in selfish desires and dilemmas.

Clingy fiancé *shudders*

I was a bit confused by the summary and found this, because I need things spelled out :) I see it gets a 7/10 rating in IMDb
Sonoko, a bored housewife entering middle age, met a young girl, Mitsuko, at a private school of art. Sonoko paints a portrait of her, and when she invite Mitsuko at her house, the two end up locked in a passionate embrace. Unable to think rationally about what she wants, Sonoko becomes steadily more obsessed with her new lover.

Yes, clingy made me shudder too :D I haven't seen this yet but it looks good. I've added it to my list.

As a kid, Katharine shaved her head and went by “Jimmy,” and as a grown-up super-famous actress, was known for her boyish attire and bohemian attitude. Her agent’s third wife referred to Hepburn as “that dykey bitch.” Her first relationship was allegedly with her college friend Laura Harding.

Ms. Hepburn did live events in later years and a friend saw her at one. He said she wore a man's suit (no tie) and called herself "he." Interesting....

If the chart is accurate she certainly got around...among others

That is interesting to know about Katherine! Thanks for sharing that story.

Whole heatedly agree

Blockers 2018 dir Kay Cannon is a movie about anxious parents of teenage girls who have decided to lose their virginity on Prom night. I've watched a trailer and I laughed. Why is it here? One of the daughters is lesbian and her Dad, like the others will do anything to stop the march of time. Looks like a good one to watch with friends.

Disobedience - (dir. Sebastián Lelio) 2017
A woman returns to her Orthodox Jewish community that shunned her for her attraction to a female childhood friend. Once back, their passions reignite as they explore the boundaries of faith and sexuality. Not seen it, but hell it's got Rachel Weisz so it is so in my bucket.

Tell it to the Bees, dir Annabel Jenkel 2019
In 1950s small town Britain, a doctor develops a relationship with her young patient's mother, with Holliday Grainger and Anna Paquin. The original screenplay was written by Irena Brignull and while it hasn't received great reviews the trailer has left me with my tummy in knots and short of air. So I'd better watch this too!

Vita and Virginia dir Chanya Button 2018 is based on the biographical story of Virginia Woolk in the 1920s ( so fab outfits ) and stars Gemma Arterton and includes Isabelle Rosselini, so it's not short on stars. "Poet and novelist Vita and literary icon Virginia run in different circles in 1920s London. When the two cross paths, the magnetic Vita decides the beguiling, stubborn and gifted Virginia will be her next conquest, no matter the cost...."

I have the heady smell of lilacs wafting into my room as I type, but no one to share it with and after watching those trailers I'm in the mood for complication and touch :rose:

You are welcome ss *S*

Let me contribute this bio of one of Hollywood's most famous funny ladies and a pioneer

I love the smell of lilacs. .I have them growing in my front yard and can't wait for them to get big enough to really bloom. Sounds like a great way to spend the day.

Just watched a documentary about Lee Miller, who most likely would have dallied with bisexuality, but that's not the point. Holy crap, what a life. I don't know if you're able to see if in the US but surely it will be syndicated somewhere and you must watch it. It saves the sting till last and it turns out to be not such a huge surprise

Sally, once again I have to say thank you. For the time and effort you must spend on this thread. And you too stickygirl.
I enjoy all the posts . . . so much to learn. :rose:

That article alone was jaw dropping. What is the documentary called, or did I miss that in the article? Thanks for sharing this!

I'm not sure you'll be able to pick up the BBC iPlayer outside the UK unless your cable service or summinck allows. The associated interviews were especially good, including her son, who knew little of his mother's past life because she put it away in boxes in the attic and never discussed it. Sally Mann's daughter was another commentator...

Putting her work into the context of some of the earlier female film actresses that you have linked, makes me realise what an amazing era it was 'between the wars'. hmm... Given that there was this blooming of emancipation and freedom in Europe, especially in France and Germany makes me wonder how things could have turned out. Could it be that after the second world war, American culture took over? I guess it did in the movie business because Europe was so broken.

But back to Lee Miller: she led about five or six different lives from being a Vogue model to being one of the first photographers to arrive at Dachau when it was liberated. The next day she had a bath in Hitler's apartment in Berlin https://talkingaboutthenewjerusalem.files.wordpress.com/2019/04/lee-miller-hitler-bath.jpeg

I saw this picture on Tumblr the other day and read the article about it. It gave me chills

Sally, I read an article about Betty Page. I don't recall if it alleged that she was either bi or lesbian but it did say that she was hired for an afternoon of passion with who I believe was either Katherine Hepburn or Lauren Bacall. Have you read of any rumors about Betty and Hollywood's leading female celebrities?
