in honor of halloween, a scary movie thread.

the movie that had the most effect on me was 'the exorcist'. i saw it first run when i was a teenager and it gave me nightmares for a couple of weeks. i was young and stupid and still believed in the devil, plus i saw the version that has the subliminal demon faces flashing thru it. the only other movie that gave me nightmares was 'clockwork orange'. again, i was a teenager seeing it first run. i found it utterly repulsive and i've never seen it again.

what was your scariest?

the original texas chainsaw massacre, seen as a teen with my first husband and his friend&girlfriend

we all got shit scared and frightened eachother more
never had seen anything remotely like it before and the violence was relentless, not letting me get my breath between horrific stuff. plus that pig mask *shudders*

The official USAAF film of the aftereffects of Hiroshima.

It still has not been released to the public.

'texas chainsaw' is one of the only two movies that i ever got up and walked out of.

Most movies that really made an impact were early on when I was a kid. Like Alien. Them shits blew my young mind right onto the mini-blinds. But as an adult? Lemme see...
I remember Event Horizon filled me with genuine dread when I first saw it, and several times after. It got re-cut for DVD though, and it was never quite the same. I think still worth a watch though. I remember I saw a Halle Berry movie called Gothika that unnerved me. I only saw it once though so no idea if it would hold up. The opening scene in the american The Grudge was wildly affecting. The rest of the movie was decent. Here's a good shout: While not a horror movie per se, the movie Zodiac features a scene of such effecting broad daylight violence that it gets me every time, my hope almost instantly disappears for these people portrayed. Warning, some of you older cats might not ever think of Donovan the same after the opening of this flick.

For this year I'm going to watch IT Chapter II, even though it was sorta poorly received. The Unspooled podcast did a show recently on the OG Night of the Living Dead that has me wanting to revisit that sweet old song. I may watch some 80's era stuff like Deadly Friend. What about you guys?

what was the other?

i was watching eli roth's history of horror the other night, coming in about halfway through and was wondering why some director(?) was getting all emotional about the Twilight Zone movie. I'd never seen it or even knew they'd been making one. A good reason for that, it turned out, as the dramatic scene being filmed caused a helicopter to crash and cut the star and the 2 children he was 'rescuing' in half. The parents of the children were on set and saw it all happen. Company got $60,000 fine for unsafe practices and the director/producer's careers were over.

it was a horrible french movie called 'hail mary'. it wasn't a horror flick, more soft porn. it had a scene where a young girl on a farm is standing at a fence and letting a cow lick her coochie, obviously not special effects. i was horrified because i thought it was animal abuse so i never did get to see the rest of the movie.

there's another movie, the original japanese version of 'pulse' that totally creeped me out tho not like the others. in it, the other world becomes too crowded so the dead take over the internet. dead relatives appear on your computer monitor and try to convince you to kill yourself because they are lonely. this was made back in early internet days and the whole concept fried my brain.

London was like that back then. very uncouth place.

scarry films? the exorcist made me paranoid of mike oldfield music.

Bambi - that fucker with the gun, just hiding, waiting, never trusted forrests since.

I forget the name of it but I was in high school. Some horror movie that at one point had some human(ish) character squirt towards the camera (me) in a terrifying inhuman manner. Spooked the shit out of me and it stayed with me for days...well done movie!

Blair witch was oddly disturbing, for such a low budget, minimalist film. The scene in the dark in "Silence of the Lambs" was pretty terrifying for me as well.

The original “The Omen” scared the living shit out of me. My dad always took us to inappropriate movies. “American Werewolf in London” and “Dressed to Kill”. I saw all
Of those movies in my early teens. No wonder I’m so “normal!”

i think the elevator scene in 'dressed to kill' is comparable to anything in 'psycho'.

was it a johnny wadd movie? that would leave a mark on any adolescent.

As a kid, it was the original "Wizard of Oz."

Then I saw "The Birds" - also as a kid, and still have no desire to watch that to this day.
