TWO souls crossed my path, I was in a mood,
And sorry I could not woo them both
And be one gentleman, long I stood
And watched first one as far as I could
To where she turned in the undergrowth;
Then watched the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Her glance transfixed me in the evening air;
Though as for that the gray tinged hair
Said life had touched them about the same,
And both that evening, oddly fey,
Exhibited nary an obvious lack.
So, I left the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if she should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two women diverged that night, and I--
I chose just one, she'd met my eye,
And that has made all the difference.
And sorry I could not woo them both
And be one gentleman, long I stood
And watched first one as far as I could
To where she turned in the undergrowth;
Then watched the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Her glance transfixed me in the evening air;
Though as for that the gray tinged hair
Said life had touched them about the same,
And both that evening, oddly fey,
Exhibited nary an obvious lack.
