Ishmael said:I related an anecdotal story. One that happens to be true. There was NO other event that happened prior to that day that would explain the uptick. It was after the Bush tax cuts and the price of gas was stable at about $1.19/gal.
The uptick perfectly follows the laws of economics as have been known for almost two centuries. In leiu of you coming up with another logical explanation my story, and the hypothesis it supports is perfectly valid.
You say "I don't know" for sure. And you're right. But if the hypothesis fits, you gotta call it quits. Unless you have a hypothesis at least as credible without resorting to wild ass conspiracy theories.

SgtSpiderMan said:Ah, interesting reasoning...because you have a hypothesis that "fits" you're right. Good thing we've moved out of the middle ages.
Here's why your hypothesis doesn't fit:
1. You would have to know the price of every item in the store the day before the price went up and have checked every price on the day that it.
did.
2. As you said less than 3% of those employed make minimum wage and those that do are usually part time workers so would their be such an increase in labor that they needed to raise the price on all items?
3. There was probably no increase in the cost of labor. The minimum wage in most states (including Florida) is well above the federal minimum wage so the federal increase may not have affected the stores you shopped in.
I'm going to spell this out for you: I'm saying you have nothing to back up your hypothesis and you were simplying trying to convince people of your point of view with a BS story. If you have any evidence which supports your story other than "it happened, so it must be true" please share it.
1.You did sampling that day? Did you sample the day before? Besides you said all prices were increased? Are you now retracting that statement?Ishmael said:Don't know shit about science, do you?
1. No I don't. I only have to know the prices of sample items. And I made a point of doing some sampling that day.
2. As I also said many union contracts are indexed to minimum wage.
3. There most certainly was. That is a given with an increase in the minimum wage. To state otherwise is to deny reality.
While your position is noted, you, on the other hand have NO explanation at all. None. Zero. Nada. If you're going to take a contrarian position, it's best to have a contrarian explanation.
"You're wrong!!"
"Why?"
"I said so."
Do some research sparky.

2. Can you verify that the 7-11 you were in was a union shop? Or that it's truck drivers are union?
3. The Florida mimimum wage is well over $1 more than the federal and has been for some time.
If I had the free time you did I could go around "researching" grocery store prices
& "sampling". I'll spell it out for you again because you still continue to miss the point of my posts. You don't have the information to say that the "price increase" was based only on an increase in federal minimum wage. I'm not going to come up with an alternate explanation, get over it. You've said yourself you have no evidence to back up your hypothesis yet you insist that it's true.
That's because your imaginary grandchildren never made it that far.Ishmael said:1. Yeah, I did. I was all over Orange and Seminole County every day. A hot dog at 7-11 was the standard 'lunch on the run.' And being single I tended to buy small, but often. Otherwise a lot of the produce rotted.
2. Oh ye of shallow thought. Who cares if 7-11 is union? The proper question would have been, "Can you verify their suppliers were union?" Doesn't matter. Let's say the suppliers employees worked for minimum wage. The prices were going to go up.
(Is your mind so shallow it is incapable of juggling more than two variables at once?)
3. And you're point is? Florida 7-11's only purchase from Florida vendors? Hell, I've done contract work for Southland Corp. in the past and I know that isn't true.
No, you don't have the 'free' time. You're too busy teaching your distorted view of the world to children. Children that shouldn't really have to think about your distorted views.
You are the reason that none of my grandchildren will ever attend public school.

Teh sky is falling, teh sky is falling!RightField said:If the minimum wage were incorporated now, it may not have a big effect, but it will have an effect. The funny thing is that the dems will raise the minimum wage, start making plans for more spending, and tax increases and those will start to drag the economy before the election and then they'll start saying "We told you that George Bush's economic plan would result in recession". Heck, it's probably their plan.
I'd laugh if the thought of it didn't hurt so much.
