The rhetoric of the minimum wage

Now hold on justa doggone minute. I thought repubs were all beer swilling nascar rednecks?

I'm sure I read that here on the GB somewhere.

Yeah, that's me...no wait...I don't like beer or nascar.

I wonder how long it'll be before anyone finds a report that actually shows a raise in the minimum wage actually hurt job growth.

Probably around the time that we find that the world is actually round.

This week, Missourah's new minimum wage went into effect. What's the first effect? The local city workers went apeshit because they didn't get a raise. Of course, they make above the minimum wage, but community pressure is forcing the city council to meet and consider across the board pay raises for city workers, which they will most likely get.

You can see the logic. If the unskilled are worth more, then surely we are worth more too! DAMNIT!!!

Okay Democrats, where do you think they are going to get the money for a pay raise?

LT's right. We CAN'T prove it, now can we?

;) ;)

Increasing the minimum wage is neccesary if people are living off of minimum wage.

The problem with that statement is, most people who are working minimum wage jobs are kids who live at home and dont really have bills.

There is however the argument that people on minimum wage arent making what they made when it was set, because of inflation. Every word of which is true.

.

About 25% of the people making minimum wage are teenagers. 16-19.

approximately 125,000 of the 500000 who earn minimum.

Did you know that the minimum wage workers in the gas station somewhere near the Pentagon did not see an airplane - they saw a white jet with ...

I'm already bored.

For the time being all we're seeing is real world reports that minimum wage increases actually help the economy.

But we're just supposed to ignore that in favor of neo con "sky is falling" chickenlittle'ism, right?

Teh sky is falling, teh sky is falling!

ignore me all ya want, people, your argument is still invalid and you're still being laughed at by most of society lol even the REPUBLICANS have abandoned you

That's a good point LT. Personally, I don't think the feds should be in the business of wage control. This should be a state matter.

After all, $2.00 in Mississippi has a bigger bang than it does in Los Angeles.

There's so many variables in job growth, I doubt anyone will be able to figure out if it has affected job growth.

However, it seems to me that it has to affect inflation. 15 cents more for that Burger King burger........ :)

Perhaps. But a minimum wage increase also encourages those on the bottom want to spend more.

That's what the nay saying chicken littles are missing here - the burger flippers who are now earning more, are going to go out and spend more.

Nothing helps the economy more than having more consumer spending.

LT, that's a good point to. The more they spend, may help create jobs in other sectors.

What I would like to know, is how many people actually make the minimum wage. For example, the state I live in, has a booming economy, I doubt that anyone makes less than $10 per hour, in wich case it has no affect on us at all.

Apparently 500,000.

As Gord already said, increasing the minimum wage is a science - too much of an increase means disaster.

But now why is it okay for Republicans to have raised their Congressional wages these past 12 years?

Because they're greedy assholes. How many Dems voted against it?..... :)

Actually, the Dems tied annual pay increases for congress to the inflation rate + some back when they were still in power and made it "automatic" unless Congress voted to change the rules. Thus, no "vote" was taken to increase it, it happens with the passage of time. I thought it was a foul thing to do then and still think it's foul now.

You mean to say that the Republicans are not guilty because of inaction?
