Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to the Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water, and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who have been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; his eager body begins to quiver. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face, your hand again caresses the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together . . .

I find this comforting whenever I am faced with losing a pet. We just let ours go, so I just wanted to post this.

See you later, little one! :catroar:

One of my favorite poems and websites

Jenny, I'm sorry that your family has had to say goodbye to a beloved pet. I understand how much it hurts.

A co-worker printed the Rainbow Bridge poem for me 7 years ago when I lost my first pet. Since then, I've forwarded it to my friends when they lose one of their pets. I've found it to be of tremendous comfort.

I also urge people to visit the Rainbow Bridge website. There are various areas to help you grieve the loss of a pet.

Thank you for posting the link, Denae! :rose:

I had discovered that site years ago when I made the decision for my 13 year old shepherd mix, and I'm glad to find it still exists.

Home doesn't feel quite "right" yet, and we'll definitely be looking for another furry pal very soon.

Just leaving a beautiful rainbow as we continue to heal.

We received sympathy cards signed by the staffs from both our regular vets and the emergency animal hospital; the latter included a separate card of a paw print to indicate how each pet leaves a lasting print on our hearts.

Thank you.

We received word today that in 3-4 weeks, there will be a litter of cats waiting for homes, so it won't be long until our home is complete again. :)

My veterinary hospital also sent a sympathy card, along with a donation in Tuff's name to the Phoenix Zoo. At Christmas, 5 months later, they sent the book Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul. I've moved further away from the Vet. Hospital and while there is a vet across the street from me, I get in the car and drive 20 minutes to the staff that I know has my pet's best interests at heart.

I'm glad to know you're thinking of taking in a new pet. I knew that no other cat would take the place of Tuff, but I also knew that home would not be home without a pet to love. I had had a few months to grieve before I had to put Tuffy to sleep and I knew I was doing the right thing. I brought two new cats in from the animal shelter less than a month later.
