Uber good girl chemistry grad student develops massive crush on fellow grad student. They both TA the same labs, so she really knows him, and they get along great. He’s super hot, and has an IG model gf to boot, who doesn’t even view MC as a threat. After winter break, she finds out they have broken up, and before she can overthink it, she asks him out on a date. Something flickers across his face, and it isn’t happiness, but he agrees. Dinner bounces between magical and awkward. Finally, he tells her that he doesn’t think they should date because his sexual preference are a little...extreme. She looks him in the right in the eye.
“They say the quiet ones are the freaks,” she lies with a smirk.
Now they are heading back to her place and she has to deliver.

Another possibility is that she isn't lying at all; she is going to show the dude what a REAL freak is.

Yes, that exactly. She's at dinner, they have moments and then he pulls away, she doesn't want him to pull away. She makes the gamble that she can pull it off, but now she has to deliver

He could be in for many surprises. The hash oil; the big rubber bands; the Paraguayan dwarves; the orangutans. And the big, hungry saurian hiding under her bed, awaiting its weekly feeding.

Mostly I just think this was really cute WITHOUT the whole "Her lying about her sexual tastes in order to prove herself to him". Like, I was super into the story right up until that moment, and then afterwards I'm like... blehk.

Why not have them both like the same stuff?
Or have her be upfront about what she's tried so far, but willing to give it a go.

I would go as far as to say she's not *yet know* she's a "freak" but quickly discovers she's indeed really into whatever this turns out to be about at the end (a slightly comical version would be if she's entirely convinced whatever deviant thing they're both into is the expected normal).

Or alternatively, just as quickly turn tables on the guy (especially in case he's trying to be an asshole) and/or eventually even gets his old girlfriend or whole another girl in as their shared pet.

That is what I was thinking. She's read the books, had the fantasies, but never actually done anything. She's totally into both him and the idea, but now with the added intellectual baggage that she just signed a blank check. She knows him really well and trusts him, and he knows and cares for her also. He's taking it slow, she's getting her doors blown off, could be fun!
