I just saw it on DVD and found it wonderfully sly and clever, and unexpectedly touching.

Discuss.

I thoroughly enjoyed The Queen and found myself feeling sympathy for Elizabeth. The portrayal of Phillip as a dunce gave it added humor; surely he isn't that dense.

Of course the presence of Helen Mirren makes most any movie for me. And she was superb as usual.

I thought it was great. Yes, it was clever. We actually watched it twice. Helen Mirren was superb.

I didn't think Prince Phillip appeared to be a dunce, Eddie. I thought he was just aloof and insulated and clueless. He mostly just didn't want to be bothered. Hmm...kinda like me. ;) (Or did you mean Prince Charles?)

I liked how William and Harry didn't become the focus of the entire movie, and, in fact, weren't really shown at all.

I have a massive crush on Helen Mirren that began well before "The Queen." So, naturally, I think she was perfectly brilliant in the film. She is sooooo sexy, even as Queen Elizabeth II.

I guess that was my only problem with a great film. Even at her 60+, I still fancy Heleen Mirren , but I see Queen Elizabeth as a terribly well-behaved grandmother.

Those pictures of the State Dinner when she came to visit Dubya!

Brilliant film, though.

God yes. Given the option to have torrid sex with any 20-something woman I wanted or Helen Mirren, I'd go for Mirren every day of the week and thrice on Sunday.

I had no intentions of watching it, but when my British friend told me that it was close to actual events, I rented it. Now I'm glad that I watched it! :nana: It was great and I couldn't take my eyes away from the TV the whole time it was playing.

I was quite unaware that sher was allowed to either rent or purchase DVDs yet after what happened last time.

She seems to be quite amiable and not at all certifiable in her present manifestation.

I've only known sher for a few years but she has always been amusing and ecologically sustainable and I would vote her number one in the poll... Hmm. no poll. Now that's odd.

I'm just at a loss as to why we're discussing sher.

I enjoyed it... but was Charles really portrayed, ya think, realistically?

Speaking of Queens... anyone interested in the new Elizabeth? I liked Cate so much in the 1st one...

More on the movie later.

I'm looking forward to the new Elizabeth movie! Queen Elizabeth was one strong woman to bring about a Golden in England.

It's also got be one of the few films Helen Mirren's made where she stays fully dressed all the way through ;)

Which is why I haven't watched it.

I thought she'd at least remove her head scarf during that flashback sequence where she loses her virginity to Winston Churchill.

Eddie, darling. Erudite though you are, I believe you are referring to Prince Charles.

TK, sugar booger, I know which prince to whom I was referring and it wasn't Charles. Philip was a dunce.

In fact I felt the movie was particularly kind to Charles and also Tony Blair. It showed both of them understanding immediately that Diana’s death was significant and would impact not only Great Britain and the monarchy but the whole world, although neither was prepared for just how large the impact would be. It even showed Charles and Blair talking with each other about what needed to be done and how QEII was of a different age and prone to be more concerned with tradition and protocol. It also showed Charles, on more than one occasion, arguing with his mother and even defying her.

QEII was indeed concerned with the long term consequences of setting precedents by giving royal treatment to someone who was not a member of the royal family or the government. She finally agreed to acquiesce for the good of the country and the monarchy.

Prince Philip was portrayed as being rather unconcerned, apparently not even understanding that what was happening would affect him; there was public talk of eliminating the monarchy altogether. He used the event as an excuse to go hunting, much to QEII’s chagrin. When needing counsel, QEII talked with her mother, not Philip.

When everyone around you understands that something extremely significant is going on and you don't get it or at least have sense enough to care, then to me you are a dunce.

Just visiting. I was hoping this thread might be about a new film along the lines of 'Hedwig and the Angry Inch,' but I knew my hopes would be - sigh - dashed.

I love Helen Mirren (lets discuss 'The Cook, the Thief, the Wife and Her Lover' or 'Excalibur') but am a little, shall I say a lot, hesitant to see a movie regarding royalty that doesn't involve chopping off heads, suicide by asps or slaves with big cocks. I mean what's the difference between the tabloid stories and the movie? And how exciting can a film be when the lead character wears hats with flowers and waves a lot?

I am an inquiring mind.
