THE PROFESSIONAL by W.C.Heinz

No score.

Heinz was a sports writer who wrote a novel about a young boxer.

Hemingway loved it. Elmore Leonard loved it. I was bored the whole time.

Truth be told boxing isn't interesting. Two men try to knock each other unconscious. Boxing is called THE CEREBRAL SPORT. It aint.

The contestants train and toil to build stamina and body mass. They train to develop lightning fast reflexes. Then they get in the ring and forget everything they know. I mean, if you run 4 miles a day, do 2500 situps, and spar 8 rounds your oughta be able to get thru 16 three minute rounds hardly outta breath. Boxing is about concentrating energy in your fist/glove and releasing it on your opponents jaw. Otherwise the idea is to conserve energy. But in the ring every boxer bounces around like the Energizer Bunny on speed. Boxing aint rocket science.

The book was about a young boxer buried in a pile of loose associations and tangential points. Most of the boxing stories I've read are about the same, they aint Rocky.
