I took my out of town Christmas/Hanukah presents to the post office this afternoon. When I finally got to the front of the long line, the postal worker told me they currently aren't allowed to accept any packages that don't have a return address. I tried to tell her one of the boxes was meant to be an anonymous gift, and she wouldn't budge.
So I made up a PO Box address and put it on the box. It was obviously different than the return address on all of the other mail I'd just given to her. But the postal worker was happy and accepted it.
I'm sure the "rule" has something to do with security, but how much can it help in reality?
