Pope: Europe Losing Faith in Its Future

Mar 24 02:58 PM US/Eastern

VATICAN CITY (AP) - Europe appears to be losing faith in its own future, Pope Benedict XVI said Saturday, warning against "dangerous individualism" on a continent where many people are having fewer children.

"One must unfortunately note that Europe seems to be going down a road which could lead it to take its leave from history," the pontiff told bishops in Rome for ceremonies to mark the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Rome, a major step toward the creation of today's European Union.

Benedict said he was concerned about Europe's "demographic profile"—though he did not describe the trends that have alarmed the continent for decades.

In countries like Italy, where many married couples have one or no children, the population is expected to shrink dramatically in a generation or two unless fertility rates quickly increase.

Benedict expressed concern that Europe's population trends, "besides putting economic growth at risk, can also cause enormous difficulties for social cohesion, and, above all, favor dangerous individualism, careless about the consequences for the future."

"You could almost think that the European continent is in fact losing faith in its own future," Benedict said.

A recent Eurostat survey showed Poland's fertility rate to be the lowest in the EU, at 1.23 children per woman.

Sociologists and economists blame the economy, particularly the unemployment rate—at 14.9 percent the highest in the EU. Worried about losing their jobs, many women in Poland put off having children, often until it is too late.

Earlier this month, Polish Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski proposed a new program of tax exemptions and support for working mothers in the hope of encouraging births and ensuring that Poles "continue as a nation."

Italy's fertility rate steadily plunged to a low of 1.25 children per women of childbearing age in 2001, with the last few years seeing a small turnaround, mainly due to births to immigrants.

Italian experts cite Italian's desire for an easier lifestyle, but they also blame shortages of day care centers, expensive housing and a sluggish job market which sees many Italians living at home until well into their 30s as reasons for the country's relatively few children.

Antonio Golini, an Italian demographer, told The Associated Press recently that unless the retirement age is raised, Italy will have more people drawing pensions than it will have workers in 2050.

Spain also has a low fertility rate, while France, with family friendly policies such as cheap day care and generous parental leave, has experienced a baby boom.

France had more babies in 2006 than in any year in the last quarter- century, capping a decade of rising fertility that has bucked Europe's graying trend. Its fertility rate in 2006 was 2.0 children per woman.

A rate of 2.1 children per woman is considered the minimum necessary to keep a population from shrinking.

I guess all who LOVE the POPE are in Church on a Sunday morning and not on a PORN BOARD!

PARIS (AP) - Outgoing French President Jacques Chirac caused a stir today on Le Feces Etat, a television news interview program modeled after Face the Nation, when he said Muslim immigrants pose a "grave threat" to Western Europe.
"France must wake up. Europe must wake up," Chirac said near the conclusion of the segment. "Muslim immigrants, by and large, have no desire to assimilate."
That failure to assimilate, Chirac said, creates tensions that are heightened by rigid laws that make it difficult for young Muslims to find employment. Work week restrictions, paid vacations and rules that make it almost impossible to fire employees hurt the economy as a whole, but make it tougher for Muslims who "don't blend well" with the population as a whole.
"If they'd get rid of the fucking towels it would help," Chirac said, adding that many Muslim women "would raise the old Eiffel Tower in my trousers" if they would stop wearing clothing that hides most of their bodies.

For a second or two I actually thought there was good news in there

I thought "Le Feces Etat" was a nice touch.

The third Islamic war against Europe
http://www.melaniephillips.com/diary/?p=1480

Earlier this month, the distinguished Islam scholar Bernard Lewis gave the Irving Kristol lecture at the American Enterprise Institute. It is a fine analysis which puts the current global jihad into much needed perspective. The period when Islamic imperialism was subdued by outside powers, says Lewis, is over. The result is a resurgence of ancient internal struggles — Shia v Sunni being the best known example. And also

a return among Muslims to what they perceive as the cosmic struggle for world domination between the two main faiths–Christianity and Islam

and a revival of the declaration of war against the Christian world.

There have been two previous attacks by Islam upon Christendom in history. The first involved the conquest of Syria, Palestine, Egypt, North Africa and a sizable part of southwestern Europe, including Spain, Portugal, southern Italy and for a while, part of France, which Christendom eventually retook with the exception of North Africa and the Middle East. The second involved the conquest of Russia, Constantinople, the Balkans, parts of Hungary and reached as far as Vienna, as well as raids on western Europe including Iceland and Ireland (and although Lewis doesn’t say it, Britain too when raiding parties of the Barbary pirates came ashore and kidnapped Britons from the churches where they were praying). Europe counterattacked, recovering Russia and the Balkans. Drily, Lewis notes as an aside:

For this phase of European counterattack, a new term was invented: imperialism. When the peoples of Asia and Africa invaded Europe, this was not imperialism. When Europe attacked Asia and Africa, it was.

Now, says Lewis, a third attempt at the Islamic conquest of Europe is underway. And this one is taking two forms: terrorism and migration. But before such an attack, the designated victims are in disarray.

What are the European responses to this situation? In Europe, as in the United States, a frequent response is what is variously known as multiculturalism and political correctness. In the Muslim world there are no such inhibitions. They are very conscious of their identity. They know who they are and what they are and what they want, a quality which we seem to have lost to a very large extent. This is a source of strength in the one, of weakness in the other.

… The Islamic radicals have even been able to find some allies in Europe… They have a left-wing appeal to the anti-U.S. elements in Europe, for whom they have so-to-speak replaced the Soviets. They have a right-wing appeal to the anti-Jewish elements in Europe, replacing the Axis. They have been able to win considerable support under both headings. For some in Europe, their hatreds apparently outweigh their loyalties.

… Where do we stand now? Is it third time lucky? It is not impossible. They have certain clear advantages. They have fervor and conviction, which in most Western countries are either weak or lacking. They are self-assured of the rightness of their cause, whereas we spend most of our time in self-denigration and self-abasement. They have loyalty and discipline, and perhaps most important of all, they have demography, the combination of natural increase and migration producing major population changes, which could lead within the foreseeable future to significant majorities in at least some European cities or even countries. But we also have some advantages, the most important of which are knowledge and freedom.

Read it all.

Familiarity breeds contempt.

Once South Americans become as familiar with the Vatican as France is, they'll boot the Papists out as well.
