As I am busily typing away at my Val day entry :D, the other question raised its ugly head. If one of the characters is a vampire, but that isn't want the story is about, more romance, which category? Automatically non-human, or do I try for the other?

Go with the one where you will get the most votes, and the best ones. Neither category is very popular, generally speaking but Romance MIGHT be better on this particular occasion.

my suggestion

It's for you to decide whether there's more romance or if the story focuses on one of the characters being non-human, in a romantic way of course. :D

Without reading the story, I'd say go with Non-human if there's a vampire mainly because I would think it's mis-categorised if I ran into a vampire in Romance.

However, if you do think more Romance, then I suggest you put a note in the beginning about the vampire if it doesn't give anything away. :)

It is my understanding that the category should reflect the central theme of the story. If I write a romance for example, I will still post it to the Lesbian Sex category, simply because that theme overrides it being a romance in my opinion.

Most stories cross categories, it's up to you as the writer to decide where the central or core theme of the work lies. Laural may change categories at her discresson if she thinks the one you have selected is not the most appropriate. What you need to ask youself is this. Would readers, going to the romance category be more put out if a main character is a vampire or would readers, in the non human category be more put out if the story was a romance?

The only real function of the categories is to allow reders to find what they want more expediently (or for the survivor contest ;) ). Since it is more a tool for readers than writers you should probably consider what you think the readers would think the story was more about.

I'm reserving my 5s for vampire stories and shoe fetishists this Valentine's Day, for what it's worth.

Vampires are sexy; shoe fetishists never get a break, because they don't deserve one, but still. I have a thing about underdogs.

Question: If there's a vampire with a shoe fetish...?

LOL

Anything is possible! (but not this time)

Thanks for that - I would hate to think that readers were unpleasantly surprised by the underlying thread of a brooding vampire in the story, so non-human it is!

And thank you, kind person, who just went and 1'd every one of my story.

Guess what, I don't care! :D Flattered, but could not give a fuck.
