The Utah Nations came forth, and are jammin out.

This is so very cool. If you aren't watching, but can, turn it on.

It is quite stunning.

Starfish, who lit the torch?

The 1980 Gold medal winners in Hockey- USA! The guy who made the final score (Mike E.?) was the one standing there and he waved the rest of the team over so they could do it together.

A good choice I think.

Mike Eruzione, who was the captain for the 1980 USA Olympic team. I agree; it was a good choice! (I was almost afraid that the Osmonds would have shown up!);)

Jenny, I thought of you when I saw Mike Eruzione step out to take the torch! Big tears rolled down my cheeks. These Opening Ceremonies had me on the verge of tears all night but that pushed me right over the edge. I think we should add that "Miracle on Ice" to the hockey thread. :D

very good

I think it was the best opening of an Olympics I have ever seen. Personlly I thought the group of people that brought out the Olympic flag was awsome but that is just me.

Ya, from what I've seen of the opening ceramony, it was pretty damn cool. And just think of the emotion all the US people were feeling as they were walking with the flag. Bet they felt like they could beat anyone in the world with that motavation. Hope they keep the same thought in their head all through out the competitions.

I had tears in my eyes from the moment the ceremonies
started! Not a joke!! I was ready to start bawling when
the 1980 men's hockey team lit the torch together...what
a surprise!! The whole program was awesome....lots of
positive aspects.....even Bush sat with the US athletes
for part of the ceremony! I think that in all my years of watching
the Olympics, this was the best I've ever seen in regards to the
opening ceremonies.

That was so cool to see John Glenn and Steven Spielberg help
carry out the Olympic flag!

I think the most eerie moment was when everyone was quiet as the
flag from the WTC was carried out.........

Now, let the games begin!

anybody see anything involving a BYU Celtic music group?

I had several teary moments

it was a fantastic show. I thought they did a wonderful job putting it all together. I caught myself saying "WOW!" out loud a couple of times.

Loved seeing Kristy Yamaguchi (sp?) skate again. She was one of my favorites.

And, France carrying flags that had the American flag on the opposite side was very touching.

I can't remember the names of the Dad/Son team that took the torch for a short time, but that got me big time. I saw the interview with Katie Couric when she talked to the son right after his grandfather died from the tragic accident and seeing them together, knowing his grandfather wasn't there.. was just a tear-jerker.

Seeing all the troops in Afghanistan was also a huge treat. All of them yelling U S A.. U S A..

~sigh. I should probably go to Mensa's melancholy post now.

The family name, father and son, was Shea....Jim Sr.
and Jim Jr....the grandfather who died recently is Jack.

Damn...I missed the lighting of the torch and spielberg coming out and the WTC flag being carried out. Was at work when I was watching some of it. :(

i always start crying when i see the opening ceremony.... especially the one for the summer olympics. so many nations, so many languages..... wonderful

Beautiful Ceremony

I enjoyed this Opening Ceremony more than any I remember seeing. Liked it so much, I'm watching the whole dang thing again now! (Well, I can't get to sleep anyhow!):D

Elizabeth.. had the same idea; heading over to the Hockey thread now!:)

I also thought the opening was excellent & was so excited to see the "Miracle on Ice" team. For me, that is still the ultimate USA Olympic moment. I cried all night watching the Trade Center Flag, the parade of nations, the athletes all look so young & the lighting of the torch was awesome. I wasn't surprised to see President Bush sitting with the athletes. He genuinely enjoys being around people. When I met him in 1999, he didn't sit on the stage, he sat with the church families. One of the best Olympic Openings ever.

Starfish,

I was completely taken over with awe as I sat and watched this breathtaking show. I think I cried the whole night, too. To know that President Bush felt so comfortable being there that he actually sat with the athletes was just incredible. I think he would have done that even if security hadn't been heightened to the state that it was.

I have never witnessed anything as splendid as what I saw last night. I was touched as I saw several flags of the different countries with their flag on one side and the USA flag on the other.

This was a union that was much needed at this time. It showed the strength of our country and all of the people who live in it. It showed the strength of the other countries who came in spite of their concerns.

Like the others who have posted before, I was especially glad of who the final torch lighters were. That one hockey game will always be with us. It made such an impact on my family that we visited the "Hockey Hall of Fame' the following year. They had a special section just for that one game. They even played it on the TV and you could sit and relive it all over again. I still cried a year later.

We are truly a nation of great people.

Enchanted

I, thoroughly, enjoyed the entire ceremony. I was moved to tears.
:)

how can I forget that?

Quite a number of countries were carrying mini-American
flags along with their country's flag......wonderful! France
did a real cool thing......one side was the French tri-color,
and the other side was our Stars-&-Stripes! :)

Yeah, those fucking french! How fucking sweet! ;)

I liked this opening too. I think the very beginnig kinda went overboard on the patriotism, but, as a whole it was pretty beautiful. Nothing will beat that archer in Barcelona though.

I remember that archer in Barcelona! :)

I don't think that the patriotism went overboard at all;
let's say it was what the doctor ordered for this international
event........but you're right, it was beautiful.

Hehehehh i was going to say something about the French,
but you said it first! :) I was going to say that I will think
about the double-sided flags they carried in the next time
I think about the thought "the French hate Americans"

Just when you think you are starting to hate them they do something that shows just how lovely they are :)
